Wooden Office Chair Making

Admin October 12, 2026

There are various methods for making wooden office chairs, including heating and bending wooden sticks, constructing a square-shaped frame, and using mortise-and-tenon joints. The specific steps are as follows:

Heating and Bending Wooden Sticks Method:
This method is suitable for making chair components with curved designs. First, select wooden sticks with uniform texture and no cracks, and soften them through steam heating or local baking. During heating, control the temperature and time to prevent carbonization or excessive drying of the wood. After softening, quickly bend the wooden sticks to the preset shape and fix them with clamps to maintain the curvature until they naturally cool and set. This step requires ensuring that the bending angle meets the design requirements and that the internal stress of the wood is evenly released to prevent deformation later. After cooling, perform preliminary sanding on the bent components to remove burrs and unevenness.

Square-Shaped Frame Method:
This method is suitable for making simple chair bases. Select four square wooden pieces of the same size and fix them into a rectangular frame using wood glue and nails or screws. To enhance stability, add diagonal braces or crossbars inside the frame. Lay the frame flat and fix a vertical wooden strip on the inner sides of both long wooden pieces to form the seat support structure. Ensure that the wooden strips are perpendicular to the frame and that the connections are tight and seamless. Finally, sand the entire frame to prepare for subsequent installation of the seat or upholstery.

Mortise-and-Tenon Joint Method:
This is a traditional woodworking technique suitable for making office chairs with complex structures and high durability. The steps include:

  1. Cutting and Preliminary Processing: Cut the wooden boards according to the design drawings, remove the surrounding bark, and initially polish the surface with sandpaper to ensure it is flat and smooth.
  2. Marking and Drilling: Mark the positions of the tenons and mortises at the connections of the wooden boards, and precisely drill holes using a chisel or woodworking drill. The size of the tenon should be slightly smaller than that of the mortise to leave space for gluing.
  3. Assembly and Fixing: Insert the tenons into the mortises, reinforce the connections with wood glue, and press them tightly with clamps until the glue dries. This step requires ensuring the perpendicularity and levelness of each component to prevent the chair from wobbling after assembly.
  4. Chair Leg and Armrest Making: Make the chair legs and armrests separately and fix them to the chair body using mortise-and-tenon joints or screws. The chair legs should be of consistent length, and the angle of the armrests should conform to ergonomic principles.
  5. Base Assembly: Connect the chair legs to the base, usually using a cross-shaped structure to enhance stability, and finally install the seat or upholstery.

Different methods are suitable for different needs. The heating and bending method is suitable for curved designs, the square-shaped frame method is suitable for simple structures, and the mortise-and-tenon joint method is suitable for high-end customization. When making, choose the appropriate method according to the characteristics of the wood, tool conditions, and design requirements, and strictly control the precision and quality of each step.
