Disassembly of Wooden Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
The disassembly of a wooden office chair can be carried out according to the following steps, which require standard operation based on the characteristics of screws and wooden tenon structures:

I. Preparation of Tools and Protective Measures
- Tool Selection: Prepare a Phillips/flat-head screwdriver (matching the screw type), an adjustable wrench (for disassembling metal connectors), and a rubber mallet (for separating wooden tenons). If the screws are rusty, prepare lubricating oil (household cooking oil can be used in an emergency).
- Protective Measures: Wear cut-resistant gloves to avoid skin injuries from metal burrs; lay a soft cloth on the workbench to prevent damage to solid wood components from bumps.
II. Identification and Marking of Structures
- Observation of Connection Points: Turn the chair upside down and focus on inspecting the inner sides of the legs, the concealed areas of the backrest, and beneath decorative carvings, as some brands may hide screws in these locations.
- Marking Components: Use label paper or a marker pen to number components such as legs, backrests, and seats for quick identification during subsequent reassembly.
III. Step-by-Step Disassembly Process
- Disassembling the Legs:
- Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws connecting the legs to the seat (usually located on the inner sides of the legs or beneath the seat).
- If the connection is a wooden tenon structure, gently tap the abutment between the leg and the seat with a rubber mallet to slowly separate the tenon. Note: Solid wood is relatively brittle, so the tapping force should be even and gentle to avoid cracking the components.
- Separating the Backrest:
- Check the connection method between the backrest and the seat: if it is fixed with screws, unscrew them and remove the backrest; if it is connected with a wooden tenon, separate it in the same way using a rubber mallet.
- Some office chair backrests may be connected to the seat via metal brackets, requiring the use of an adjustable wrench to remove the nuts on the brackets.
- Disassembling the Seat:
- If the seat is composed of multiple layers of wood (such as a separate design for the cushion and the base plate), check for hidden screws or clips and disassemble them layer by layer.
- During disassembly, store the screws in sealed bags and label them according to the component numbers (e.g., โLeg-Screw 1โ, โBackrest-Screw 2โ) to avoid confusion.
IV. Handling Special Situations
- Rusty Screws: Drip lubricating oil (or cooking oil) onto the screws and let it penetrate for 10-15 minutes to soften the rust before turning them. If they still cannot be removed, use a screwdriver and a hammer to gently tap the tail of the screw to loosen it.
- Hidden Fixing Points: If abnormal protrusions are found on decorative carvings or wood grain, they may indicate hidden screw locations, requiring่ฏๆขative disassembly with a screwdriver.
V. Precautions
- It is recommended to disassemble the chair in a โbottom-upโ order, i.e., disassemble the legs first, then the backrest, and finally the seat, to improve efficiency and reduce the risk of component damage.
- Avoid using a metal hammer to directly strike wooden tenons, as this may cause the solid wood to crack or the tenon head to deform.
- If the chair has a soft-padded seat, the fabric must be stripped first (e.g., by removing the fixing nails with a screwdriver) before disassembling the wooden structure.
