Wooden Office Chair Assembly
Admin October 17, 2026
The assembly process of wooden office chairs varies depending on the type of chair, mainly divided into two types: traditional hardwood office chairs and general school chairs assembled with screws and nuts. Details are as follows:

Traditional Hardwood Office Chair Assembly Process
- Material Selection and Cutting: Select dry, aged hardwoods such as jujube, elm, or oak. The seat should be cut to a length of one foot five inches, a width of one foot four inches, and a thickness of one inch two. Prepare four legs, each two feet high and one and a half inches square, and cut the materials to size.
- Planing: Plane the cut materials all over. The seat should be planed flat, and the legs should be planed on all four sides with rounded edges. When planing, follow the grain, pressing one plane over half of the previous one. After planing, feel for any burrs and sand them smooth. After planing, stack the materials in a cool, shaded place to dry overnight.
- Mortising and Tenoning: Draw lines on the underside of the seat according to size and make four mortises, each one inch two deep. The tenons on the legs should match the mortises snugly. Use a chalk line to draw straight lines to ensure the four mortises are perfectly aligned, with the tenons one-tenth of an inch smaller than the mortises. The mortises for the backrest are made on the rear edge of the seat, with two uprights each two feet two inches high and three cross supports evenly spaced in between.
- Leg and Support Installation: Apply wood glue to the four legs and align the tenons with the mortises. Install the opposite pair of legs first, then the other pair. Install two cross supports between the legs, with the front and back supports generally level. The cross supports should be one foot two inches long, with tenons at both ends, and installed in the middle of the legs. When tapping, use a wooden block to cushion the blow. After installation, pull on the supports to ensure they are stable and do not rattle.
- Backrest Installation: Align the tenons of the two uprights with the mortises on the rear edge of the seat and install the cross supports one by one. The backrest should have a slight backward tilt.
General School Chair Assembly Process with Screws and Nuts
- Construct the chair frame using screws and nuts, then install the seat, and finally the backrest. There are three screws on each side of the chair, below the left and right, to secure the legs. If the friction of the nuts is sufficient, manual installation is possible. Align the holes, maintain a 180ยฐ horizontal position, and install from top to bottom.
- If asymmetry occurs on both sides during assembly, one person can hold one end on the left while the other person slowly moves the right side until they match.
- After the chair frame is complete, install the seat. There are four screws to be inserted into the seat, which should be installed symmetrically, one on each side. After installation, secure them with bolts on the back.
- After seat installation, test the chair. Wipe it down and check for any creaking sounds. If there are no abnormalities, install the leg covers.
- Finally, install the backrest. Install one screw on the left, then one on the right, repeating twice until the backrest is no longer loose.
