Where to Oil Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

Oiling office chairs requires differentiation based on material and component type, as detailed below:

I. Wooden or Leather Components

  1. Suitable Oils:
    • Wooden Components (e.g., seat, armrests): Prioritize wood wax oil, whose natural ingredients can penetrate wood fibers, forming a protective layer and enhancing shine.
    • Leather Components (e.g., genuine or synthetic leather seats): Require leather care oil, containing fatty and waxy ingredients to prevent leather from cracking and restore softness.
  2. Operating Steps:
    • Clean the Surface: Use a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner to remove dust. For stubborn stains, wipe with a neutral cleaner and allow to dry completely before oiling.
    • Oiling Method:
      • Wooden components: Dip a cotton cloth in a small amount of wood wax oil and apply a thin coat along the wood grain, avoiding accumulation. After letting it sit for 15 minutes, wipe off excess oil with a clean cotton cloth.
      • Leather components: First test the compatibility of the care oil in an inconspicuous area (e.g., the bottom of the chair back) to confirm no discoloration or damage occurs. Then, wipe the worn areas in a circular motion and polish with a soft cloth after letting it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Frequency: Replenish oil every 3-6 months for wooden seats; care for leather seats every 6-12 months, adjusting based on usage frequency and environmental humidity.

II. Moving Mechanical Components

  1. Suitable Lubricants:
    • Low-friction Components (e.g., wheel gaps, screw connections): Use sewing machine oil or WD-40, which have strong fluidity and can penetrate small gaps.
    • Load-bearing Components (e.g., gas lift rods, backrest pivots): Recommend using lithium grease, which is heat-resistant and wear-resistant, suitable for long-term load-bearing scenarios.
  2. Operating Steps:
    • Clean Components: Disassemble the wheels or use a toothbrush to remove dust and hair from gaps to prevent impurities from causing lubrication failure.
    • Lubrication Method:
      • Wheels: Drip 1-2 drops of sewing machine oil or WD-40 onto the pivot and rotate the wheel to allow the oil to penetrate evenly.
      • Gas lift rods: Apply a small amount of lithium grease and repeatedly push and pull the lift rod 5-10 times to allow the lubricant to fully cover the contact surface.
  3. Frequency: Lubricate the wheels every 2-3 months; treat the rotating shafts (e.g., backrest adjustment areas) every half a year, shortening the cycle for frequent use.

III. Prohibited Items

  • Prohibited Oils: Do not use edible oils (e.g., olive oil, rapeseed oil), engine oil, or automotive hard grease on any materials. These oils are prone to oxidation and deterioration, fostering mold growth or corroding metal/leather components.
  • Operating Environment: Avoid humid or high-temperature environments when oiling to prevent rapid oil evaporation or dust adsorption, which can affect the results.
