What Kind of Leather is Used for Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

The common 'leather' materials used for office chairs mainly include genuine leather, ordinary PU or PVC leather, and microfiber leather.

Genuine leather is natural animal hide, offering a soft and delicate texture with excellent breathability, providing a comfortable sitting experience. It is commonly found in high-end office chairs. However, it is relatively expensive and has strict requirements for the usage environment, needing to avoid direct sunlight and humid conditions to prevent issues like cracking and fading. Regular maintenance with professional leather care products is required. Some merchants may use fake genuine leather made from spliced scraps or coated and embossed materials to impersonate high-quality genuine leather. You can identify it by observing the grain clarity (natural leather has a natural texture on its surface), pressing for wrinkles (genuine leather wrinkles recover slowly and have a natural texture when pressed), and smell (genuine leather has a slight animal hair odor).

Ordinary PU or PVC leather belongs to artificial synthetic leather, which is inexpensive and a common choice for budget-friendly office chairs. PU leather uses polyurethane as the coating, while PVC leather uses polyvinyl chloride as the coating. Both are made by compounding a base fabric with a plastic coating. However, these materials have poor aging resistance, and the coating is prone to cracking and peeling after long-term use due to factors like ultraviolet rays and temperature changes. They usually need to be replaced within two to three years and are suitable for scenarios with limited budgets and low durability requirements.

Microfiber leather is a high-end category of synthetic leather, using ultra-fine fibers as the base fabric and covered with a high-performance polyurethane resin layer. Its abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance are significantly better than those of ordinary synthetic leather, and its breathability is closer to that of natural leather, balancing comfort and durability. Its price is between that of genuine leather and ordinary PU leather, making it a stable and cost-effective choice, especially suitable for mid-to-high-end office scenarios that require long-term use and pursue quality.

Purchase Recommendations:

  • Confirm the type of leather, be wary of misleading labels like 'top-grain cowhide', and ask the merchant to provide material test reports or samples for observation.
  • Focus on checking the abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance indicators, and prioritize products that pass international standards (such as ISO 5470 abrasion resistance test and ISO 1419 hydrolysis resistance test).
  • Observe whether the stitching is even and tight and whether the fabric thickness is consistent (the fabric thickness of high-quality office chairs is usually โ‰ฅ1.2mm). These details reflect the material quality and craftsmanship.
