Weaving Office Chair Tutorial

Admin October 10, 2026

There are mainly two styles of woven office chairs: rope-seat chairs and wooden-strip woven chairs. Here are the specific tutorials:

Rope-Seat Chair Weaving Tutorial

  • Materials Needed: Prepare approximately 2 pounds of rope and cut it in half (about 200 feet each half), 2-3 loom shuttles with a thickness of 1/8 inch, wooden spacers of 1 inch and 1/2 inch thickness (same length as the chair), and a crochet hook. The rope is the main material for weaving, the shuttles assist in weaving, the spacers control the weaving spacing, and the crochet hook is used to tidy up loose threads.
  • Weaving Steps:
    • Fix the Starting Point: Tie the first half of the rope in a loop around the horizontal seat bar. This is the starting point of weaving. Ensure the rope is firmly fixed to lay the foundation for subsequent weaving.
    • Initial Wrapping: Place the 1-inch spacer at a right angle to the knot and wrap the rope around to the width of the chair, then return to the starting point to form a loop. This step determines the initial width and basic shape of the weaving.
    • Repeated Wrapping: Repeat horizontal wrapping 5 times, pushing the rope tight with your fingers each time, and wrap the seat bar separately to form spacers. Through multiple horizontal wrappings and the setting of spacers, the weaving structure becomes tighter and more stable.
    • Overall Coverage: Repeat the step of '5 horizontal wrappings + 1 spacer' until the entire chair is covered. If the rope runs out, tie a knot after the spacer to continue the rope, ensuring the continuity of the weaving.
    • Tidying Up the End: Use a crochet hook to tidy up loose threads, cut off excess rope, and weave it into the warp to prevent it from unraveling, making the seat surface cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.

Wooden-Strip Woven Office Chair Tutorial

  • Materials Needed: Scrap wooden strips, glue, wooden boards, a nail gun, sanding tools, and varnish. Scrap wooden strips are the main material for weaving, glue is used to bond the strips, wooden boards are used to reinforce the chair structure, a nail gun can fix the boards and strips, sanding tools make the chair surface smooth, and varnish serves to protect and beautify.
  • Making Steps:
    • Wooden Strip Processing: Mark and divide the wooden strips into 3 sections, interweave them until the middle part is filled, and then glue them together. Interweaving increases the stability and strength of the weaving.
    • Backrest Reinforcement: Fix the heads of the wooden strips and heat them to bend. After bending, nail wooden boards to reinforce the backrest part, making the backrest more sturdy and durable.
    • Overall Reinforcement: Nail two wooden boards on each of the four sides of the chair for reinforcement, cut off excess wooden strips, and sand down burrs to further enhance the stability and comfort of the chair.
    • Surface Treatment: Finally, spray varnish to complete the making. Varnish can protect the chair surface, prevent the wooden strips from getting damp and rotting, and increase the chair's luster.
