Office Chairs Made from Recycled Waste Materials

Admin October 11, 2026

There are office chairs made from recycled waste materials, but their quality varies greatly, and some products may pose safety hazards.

I. Existence of Office Chairs Made from Recycled Waste Materials
In concentrated seating manufacturing areas such as Anji County, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, some enterprises have achieved industrial application of waste material recycling technology. For example, waste materials such as off-cuts and defective products generated during the production of sponges are remade into 'recycled sponges' through adhesive bonding processes and used as filling for office chair cushions. Meanwhile, waste building materials (such as density boards and particle boards) can also be used as frame materials for chair bodies after being cut and polished. These recycled materials not only reduce raw material costs but also align with the concept of a circular economy. Some enterprises have even applied them to products with high safety requirements, such as children's chairs.

II. Controversy Over Quality and Safety Hazards
Although waste material recycling technology has environmental value, the quality of its products remains controversial. Taking a popular 'sliding stool' priced at 89.9 yuan as an example, consumers found that it used waste sponges and moldy wooden boards inside after disassembly. Although the merchant claimed that the product had passed tests for appearance, physical and chemical properties, mechanical properties, and formaldehyde emission, waste sponges may experience reduced elasticity and bacterial growth due to long-term use or improper storage, while moldy wooden boards may release harmful substances (such as mycotoxins), posing a threat to user health. In addition, if the adhesive bonding process for recycled materials does not meet standards, it may lead to structural problems such as cushion collapse and frame breakage, affecting usage safety.

III. Current Regulatory and Standard Status
Currently, China's supervision of office chairs is mainly based on national standards such as 'Office Furniture - Office Chairs' (GB/T 38607-2020), covering indicators such as structural safety, formaldehyde emission, and flame retardancy. However, the standards do not explicitly restrict the proportion or source of recycled materials used, only requiring that the materials meet environmental and safety requirements. This has led some enterprises to use waste materials of uncontrollable quality to reduce costs and even cover up problems with false test reports. When purchasing, consumers need to focus on whether the product has passed authoritative certifications (such as China Environmental Labeling Product Certification and CQC Certification) and request complete test reports from merchants.
