Office Chair for Units

Admin October 08, 2026

The English translation of the office chair used in units is 'office chair'. It is a chair equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities, and can be divided into narrow and broad categories.

Categories

  • Narrow sense: Refers to the backrest chair used when a person is sitting at a desk for work.
  • Broad sense: Refers to all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs.

Development History

The office chair originally evolved from the Windsor chair. Thomas Jefferson transformed it into a swivel chair, facilitating flexible rotation during office work. Charles Robert Darwin added wheels to the office chair, further enhancing its mobility. Thomas Warren invented an office chair in 1849 that could rotate, slide, and had a spring-loaded seat, making the functions of the office chair more comprehensive.

Structure and Materials

  • Structure: Composed of eight basic components, including wheels, a five-star base, a gas lift, and a chassis. Among them, the gas lift is the core component for adjusting the seat height. It controls the rise and fall of the seat through changes in air pressure to meet the needs of different heights and usage scenarios.
  • Materials: Common materials include leather and mesh. Leather models are mostly made of PU leather or genuine leather. These office chairs usually have a more upscale appearance and are mainly used for executive chairs and mid-level chairs. Mesh models, due to their good breathability, are commonly found in junior chairs, especially suitable for summer use, allowing users to stay dry and comfortable during long hours of office work.

Quality and Safety Issues

  • On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada implemented a recall of office chairs made in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking, which posed a falling hazard. Twelve reports had been received, including ten injury reports.
  • On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation found that 15 batches of office chairs failed the national supervision and random inspection, with stability issues being particularly prominent.
  • On January 16, 2025, the United States implemented a recall of WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China due to the risk of bolt failure, which posed a falling hazard. Seven reports had been received, including two minor injuries.
