Uneven Floor Office Chair

Admin October 14, 2026

When an uneven floor causes an office chair to tilt, solutions include checking the casters, adjusting the chair leg height, inspecting the gas lift and base, and tightening the screws.

Check and repair the casters: Place the office chair upright and carefully observe whether each caster is in contact with the floor. If any caster is not touching the floor, the chair is likely to tilt. Then, turn the chair upside down and closely inspect the casters for signs of damage, such as cracked wheels or bent axles. If caster damage is found, since replacing a single wheel may lead to instability due to specification differences, it is advisable to purchase a new set of matching casters and replace all of them to ensure the integrity and stability of the chair's casters.

Adjust the chair leg height: Use the chair seat as a horizontal reference to adjust the length of the chair legs. For shorter chair legs, use rubber pads to elevate them. Select rubber pads with an appropriate thickness and hardness and place them under the chair legs to increase the height and keep the chair level. If the chair legs are too long, use an angle grinder or sandpaper to sand down the longer legs. Be sure to apply even pressure during operation to avoid excessive sanding that could damage the legs. Additionally, adjustable feet can be used. Simply screw them onto the bottom of the chair and fine-tune the leg height by rotating the adjustment mechanism on the feet to make the chair adapt to uneven floors.

Inspect the gas lift and base: Malfunctions of the gas lift and base can also cause the chair to tilt. If the gas lift is damaged, the chair will lose its balance and tilt left or right. In this case, a new gas lift needs to be replaced to ensure the chair's lifting function works properly and remains balanced. If the base has issues such as cracks, aging, or looseness at the connection points of the five-star feet, it can cause the chair to wobble or even tilt. For base malfunctions, repair or replacement should be carried out according to the specific situation. For example, a cracked base can be repaired by welding, and a severely aged base should be replaced with a new one.

Tighten the screws: When the armrest screws or base connection screws become loose, the chair may shift and feel wobbly. Use a screwdriver or wrench to first loosen the screws counterclockwise, add a small amount of lubricant such as engine oil or WD - 40 to reduce the friction between the screws and the screw holes, and then tighten the screws clockwise. If the screw holes are worn, dip a toothpick or thin wooden stick in an appropriate amount of white glue and insert it into the screw holes. After the glue dries, screw the screws back in. This increases the friction between the screws and the screw holes, providing reinforcement.
