Types of Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chairs are mainly classified into two systems based on usage scenarios and functions, and design concepts, with specific types and characteristics as follows:

Classification by Usage Scenarios and Functions

  1. Work Chairs
Primarily used in industrial settings such as production workshops and factories, with an emphasis on practicality and durability. Their structure is usually simple, focusing on basic support functions. The materials are often wear-resistant plastic or metal frames, paired with breathable mesh or hard cushions to meet the needs of long-standing or intermittent sitting work. Due to the specificity of the usage scenarios, work chairs have fewer adjustment functions but require sufficient load-bearing capacity and stability.

  2. Student Chairs
Suitable for school classrooms, libraries, and conference venues, with a focus on portability and versatility. Their structure typically includes adjustable metal stands, plastic or wooden seats and backrests, with some models equipped with simple armrests. Student chairs are smaller in size, easy to move and store, and are mainly made of economical plastic or composite panels, which are low-cost and easy to maintain, suitable for high-frequency usage scenarios.

  3. Computer Chairs
Specifically designed for office environments, characterized by their compactness and flexibility, suitable for personal workstations with limited space. Their core function is to provide basic sitting support, with materials ranging from leather, mesh, or plastic. Some models are equipped with adjustable height and rotation functions. The backrest of computer chairs is usually short, covering only the area above the waist, suitable for short-term office work or use with height-adjustable desks, but lacking targeted ergonomic design.

  4. Mid-back Managerial Chairs
Mainly targeted at management or senior staff, with a design that emphasizes comfort and space occupation. They are larger in size, with backrest heights often exceeding the shoulders. Some models are equipped with headrests, adjustable armrests, and thick cushions, with materials often selected from leather or high-density foam to enhance texture and durability. Mid-back managerial chairs have richer adjustment functions to meet the personalized needs of users of different heights but require larger office spaces.

Classification by Design Concepts

  1. Ordinary Office Chairs
Oriented towards basic functions, with a simple structure and low cost. Their materials range from leather, mesh, or solid wood, but lack targeted ergonomic design, such as fixed backrests and armrests, non-adjustable cushion heights, etc. Long-term use can easily lead to problems such as waist suspension and poor blood circulation, suitable for short-term meetings or temporary office scenarios.

  2. Ergonomic Chairs
Designed based on the curve of the human spine, emphasizing dynamic support and health protection. Their core functions include adjustable headrests, armrests, lumbar supports, and seat depths. The flexible lumbar support system can automatically adjust the support force according to changes in sitting posture, effectively dispersing lumbar pressure. The materials are often high-elasticity tech mesh, which is highly breathable and tear-resistant. Some high-end models are equipped with more breathable 3D mesh or memory foam cushions. Ergonomic chairs reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting through scientific design, suitable for users who need to work for long periods.
