The Office Chair Smells Bad
Admin October 14, 2026
The bad smell of an office chair may be caused by the release of harmful substances such as formaldehyde or the growth of mold inside. It can be resolved through emergency odor removal or deep cleaning. If accompanied by symptoms such as sore eyes and throat, formaldehyde testing is required.

Quick Emergency Odor Removal Methods
- Powerful Ventilation: Move the chair to a well-ventilated area such as a balcony or near a window, and open the doors and windows to create air convection. If the weather is good, fabric or mesh chairs can be briefly exposed to sunlight. Utilize sunlight and wind to accelerate the volatilization of odor molecules, but avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight that may cause material aging.
- Activated Carbon/Bamboo Charcoal Adsorption: Place activated carbon bags around, beneath, or on the seat of the chair. Utilize their porous structure to adsorb odor molecules, formaldehyde, and moisture in the air. Regular replacement is necessary to maintain adsorption effectiveness.
- White Vinegar Solution Wiping: Dilute white vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Dip a soft towel into the solution, wring it out until it is semi-dry, and wipe the surface of the seat (avoid allowing liquid to seep inside). Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline odors and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a clean towel dampened with water to wipe again and open the windows for ventilation.
- Use Professional Odor Removers: Choose car interior odor removal sprays or fabric disinfectant and odor removers. Before use, test a small area on an inconspicuous part of the chair to confirm no damage or staining occurs, then spray according to the instructions. Utilize their ingredients that decompose odor molecules to remove bad smells.
Complete Steps for Deep Cleaning and Odor Removal
- Preparation: Prepare a vacuum cleaner, soft-bristled brush, clean towels, and specialized fabric cleaner, neutral laundry detergent, or soapy water.
- Thorough Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner to comprehensively clean dust, hair, and debris from the seat, backrest, armrests, and crevices. For mesh chairs, gently tap the edges to shake out dust trapped in the seams.
- Clean Stains and Mold Spots: Wipe ordinary stains with diluted cleaning solution or soapy water; for mold spots or stubborn stains, spray with specialized mold remover or strong cleaner, gently brush with a soft-bristled brush, and let it sit for half an hour to decompose the mold spots.
- Remove Residues: Wipe away cleaning agent residues with clean water to prevent long-term adhesion of chemicals that may cause recurring odors.
Special Situation Handling: If symptoms such as sore eyes and throat occur when smelling the odor, immediately test the formaldehyde concentration. If formaldehyde levels are excessive, it indicates that harmful substances are being released from the chair material. Stop using the chair and replace it with a qualified product to avoid health risks.
