Traditional Office Chair Introduction
Admin October 22, 2026
Traditional office chairs have evolved from Windsor chairs and feature functions such as rotation and sliding. They come in various types, have core structural components, and are made of common materials and fabrics.

Origin and Development
Office chairs originally evolved from Windsor chairs originating in the English town of Windsor. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, transformed it into a swivel chair. Charles Robert Darwin added wheels to the chair, inventing the "wooden armchair on wheels." In 1849, Thomas Warren, a train seat manufacturer, invented the first true modern office chair based on train seats, featuring rotation, sliding, and elastic seat functions.
Types
- Executive Chair: Features a high-back structure with standard armrests, equipped with a seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and a pneumatic height adjustment system. It adjusts height via a pneumatic rod and utilizes elastic supports and rollers for rotational cushioning and movement locking, suitable for senior management.
- Staff Chair: Designed with a low backrest and no armrests, it has a relatively simple structure that meets the basic daily office needs of ordinary staff.
Core Structural Components
- Pneumatic Rod: The core component for adjusting seat height, it utilizes the compressibility of gas to change the volume of gas within the rod through manual or electric means, thereby achieving seat elevation.
- Spring: Provides support and cushioning in the seat cushion and backrest. The elasticity can be adjusted according to different usage needs to enhance comfort.
- Slide Rail: A key component for enabling forward and backward sliding of the office chair, usually made of metal, known for its high strength and wear resistance.
- Armrest: Offers additional support and comfort, with its shape, height, and angle adjustable according to user needs.
- Locking Mechanism: Manually or automatically locks the adjustable components of the seat in the desired position to prevent accidental movement during use.
Common Materials and Fabrics
- Leather Fabric: Made of PU leather or genuine leather, it offers a good texture but relatively poor breathability.
- Mesh Fabric: Includes high-quality mesh, tech mesh (such as NanoFlex4.0 tech mesh), flocked mesh (such as Italian imported flocked mesh, dragon pattern mesh), and DuPont Bounce tech mesh, known for their good breathability.
- Structural Components such as Frames, Bases, and Chair Legs: Often made of metal (such as aluminum alloy) or high-strength engineering plastics to ensure stability and safety.
