Toxic Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

Toxic office chairs pose multiple serious health hazards, primarily including the use of 'black-hearted scrap materials' and excessive formaldehyde levels.

Some toxic office chairs are made using 'black-hearted scrap materials' during the manufacturing process. These scrap materials are of poor quality and may contain various harmful substances. For example, a man purchased an office chair online and, after sitting on it for a few months, experienced discomfort and had to be hospitalized. Upon disassembling the chair, it was found to be entirely made of 'black-hearted scrap materials'. These inferior materials not only fail to provide stable support, affecting the user's sitting posture and comfort, but long-term use may also adversely affect the bones and muscles, leading to issues such as back pain and neck discomfort.

Excessive formaldehyde levels are also a common problem with toxic office chairs. CCTV has exposed the low pass rate of quality inspections for office chairs, with some substandard chairs containing excessive formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor that poses significant health risks. Prolonged exposure to low concentrations of formaldehyde can cause symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue, affecting daily life and work efficiency. When formaldehyde concentrations are high, its irritant effect becomes even stronger, causing harm to the nervous system, immune system, and liver. In terms of the nervous system, it may lead to symptoms such as memory loss and insomnia; in the immune system, it can weaken the body's immunity, making it prone to various diseases; and damage to the liver may affect its normal metabolic function, leading to liver diseases.

To avoid purchasing toxic office chairs, consumers should choose products from reputable channels and well-known brands when making selections, check the product's quality inspection reports to ensure they meet relevant safety standards. Additionally, newly purchased office chairs should be placed in a well-ventilated area for a period of time to allow harmful substances such as formaldehyde to fully volatilize before use, thereby reducing potential health risks.
