Toxic Components in Office Chairs

Admin October 19, 2026

The toxic components that may be present in office chairs mainly include formaldehyde, benzene series (benzene, toluene, xylene), and volatile organic compounds (TVOC). Their sources and hazards are as follows:

1. Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is one of the most common toxic components in office chairs, primarily originating from low-quality adhesives or coatings used during the manufacturing process. For example, adhesives in artificial wood panels (such as density boards and particle boards) often contain formaldehyde. If the panel quality is substandard or there are defects in the production process, formaldehyde will continuously be released into the air. Long-term exposure to formaldehyde may cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, and eye irritation, and even increase the risk of blood diseases such as leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer.

2. Benzene Series (Benzene, Toluene, Xylene)
Benzene series mostly come from solvents or additives in paints and coatings. Benzene is highly volatile and can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, inhibiting the central nervous system. Long-term exposure may lead to dizziness, fatigue, memory loss, and even aplastic anemia or leukemia. Toluene and xylene have relatively lower toxicity but can still irritate the respiratory tract and skin, triggering allergic reactions or nervous system damage.

3. Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC)
TVOC is a collective term for various volatile organic compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, esters, etc., mainly originating from plastic components, surface coatings, or adhesives of office chairs. The release of TVOC can degrade indoor air quality. Long-term exposure may cause headaches, nausea, skin allergies, and even damage to organs such as the liver and kidneys. Some TVOC components (such as vinyl chloride) are also carcinogenic.

Source and Risk Association
The release of these toxic components is closely related to material quality. Low-quality artificial wood panels, substandard adhesives, or low-quality coatings are the main sources of pollution. For example, panels using urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives will continuously release formaldehyde, while paints containing benzene solvents may simultaneously release benzene, toluene, and xylene. Long-term exposure to such environments can lead to the absorption of harmful substances through respiration or skin contact, potentially causing irreversible health damage.

Prevention Recommendations
When purchasing office chairs, prioritize products that have passed environmental certifications (such as China's Ten-Ring Certification and the EU's CE Certification) and avoid using low-quality artificial wood panels or coatings containing benzene solvents. Newly purchased office chairs should be ventilated for a period of time before use to reduce the concentration of harmful substances.
