Tianjin Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 09, 2026

There is no specific report directly about the office chair explosion in Tianjin, but such incidents have occurred in other regions, and there are associated risks that require heightened vigilance.

Causes of Explosions

Office chair explosions mostly occur in low-quality pneumatic lifting chairs, with the main causes including:

  • Insufficient nitrogen purity: If the nitrogen filled in the pneumatic rod is not pure enough, the internal pressure can rise abnormally under frequent lifting or high-temperature conditions, leading to an explosion.
  • Inadequate cylinder wall strength or poor material quality: Some low-quality pneumatic rods use thin-walled or low-strength materials to reduce costs, making them unable to withstand normal pressure and prone to rupture.
  • Poor sealing at the closure: If there are sealing defects at the closure of the pneumatic rod, gas leakage or the entry of external impurities can trigger an imbalance in internal pressure, leading to an explosion.

Typical Cases

  • On January 14, 2009, a 14-year-old boy named Xiaogang in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was adjusting the height of a pneumatic chair when the pneumatic rod suddenly exploded, piercing his buttocks and injuring multiple blood vessels. He died from excessive blood loss despite rescue efforts.
  • On the evening of April 20, 2007, Ms. Lou in Dinghai District, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, was sitting on a chair that exploded, puncturing the seat and sending numerous fragments up to ten centimeters deep into her body.
  • On the evening of March 26, 2008, the computer chair in the home of Mr. Lin, a resident of Wanjia Xingfu Yuan on Zhangjiang North Avenue in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, suddenly exploded, injuring Mr. Lin on his back and hands, and sending a small iron rod about 15 centimeters long flying to the ceiling.

Preventive Measures

  • Purchase genuine products: Choose lifting chairs produced by regular manufacturers with production licenses and quality certifications, and avoid buying "three-no" products (products without a manufacturer's name, production date, or quality certification).
  • Inspect the pneumatic rod: When purchasing, test the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting and lowering without any jamming or abnormal noises; ensure that a blast-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod.
  • Use correctly: Avoid repeatedly lifting and lowering the chair, sliding it around, or sitting down abruptly; non-professionals should not disassemble the cylinder; keep the chair away from hot objects (such as heaters and stoves).
  • Regular maintenance: After using for a period of time, have professionals inspect components such as the pneumatic rod and blast-proof steel plate; promptly repair or replace them if cracks or signs of looseness are found.
