The Office Chair Steel Pipe is Broken

Admin October 17, 2026

After the steel pipe of an office chair is damaged, the following repair methods can be selected according to the fracture location and the extent of the damage:

  1. Welding Repair If the fracture occurs in a load-bearing structure (such as chair legs or crossbeams), welding repair is the preferred option. The welding repair cost for an ordinary iron chair ranges from 150 to 200 yuan. For simple fracture locations (such as a single chair leg), a technician may be able to complete the welding in about half an hour. For stainless steel materials, TIG welding technology should be used to ensure firmness. However, it should be noted: If the iron pipe is hollow and has a thin wall thickness (such as less than 0.5 millimeters), welding is more difficult, and other parts may break again after welding. In this case, it is recommended to use other methods.

  2. Simple Reinforcement If the fracture occurs in a non-load-bearing area (such as the decorative strip on the backrest or the edge of the armrest), the following methods can be used:

  • A-glue Bonding + Metal Sheet Reinforcement: Bond the fracture with A-glue and then install a metal sheet to enhance the structural strength.
  • Carbon Fiber Patch Wrapping: Wrap carbon fiber patches to improve the local load-bearing capacity.
  • Metal Glue Repair: Clean the iron pipe, sand the fracture, evenly apply metal glue (the coating thickness should not exceed 1 millimeter), splice it, and then place it in a well-ventilated area to dry for about 24 hours.
  1. Metal Plate Reinforcement For fracture locations with a thin structure or those that require long-term load-bearing (such as the connection between chair legs and crossbeams), holes can be directly drilled at the fracture location to install a metal plate, with a material cost of about 50 yuan. This method requires ensuring that the metal plate fits closely with the original structure to extend the chair's service life.

  2. Screw Fixing If the fracture location has a small load (such as the crossbar on the backrest), holes can be drilled at the fracture location and screws can be installed for fixing. However, sanding and coloring treatments are required to ensure the appearance. Note: This method is only suitable for non-load-bearing structures, and the screws should be regularly checked for looseness.

  3. Wooden Stick or Thin Pipe Sleeve Connection For fractures in hollow iron pipes:

  • Wooden Stick Sleeve Connection: Find a wooden stick and shave it to an appropriate diameter, and then hammer it into the two broken ends of the steel pipe.
  • Thin Pipe Sleeve Connection: Take a section of thin pipe that is slightly thicker than the support rod, pass the support rod through both ends of the thin pipe, apply glue to the sleeve connection part, drill a hole at the midpoint, and then install the fittings.
  1. Three-way Connector Repair (Suitable for Stainless Steel Chairs) Use an angle grinder to cut a slot in the middle of the three-way connector, clean the burrs, heat it with a hot air blower, then clamp the three-way connector at the fracture location and tighten it with an American hose clamp.

Repair Precautions:

  • Before repair, evaluate the load-bearing situation at the fracture location. For damage to load-bearing structures, it is recommended to prioritize welding or replacing the parts.
  • If the chair has design defects or material quality issues (such as thin steel pipe walls or false welding points), there may still be safety hazards after repair. It is recommended to contact the merchant to negotiate a return, exchange, or compensation.
  • After repair, check the stability of the chair to ensure there is no shaking or abnormal noise and avoid secondary damage.
