The Office Chair Pull Rod is Broken

Admin October 10, 2026

Troubleshooting and repairing faults in the office chair pull rod (hydraulic rod/lifting rod) can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Identifying the Fault Type

  1. Inability to Lift or Lower: This may be caused by poor internal sealing of the hydraulic rod, control valve failure, insufficient hydraulic pressure or air pressure, or cylinder damage. For example, if a pneumatic lifting chair emits a gas leak sound or lifts and lowers slowly, it is likely a cylinder issue; if a hydraulic chair leaks oil, the hydraulic rod needs to be replaced.
  2. Unusual Noises During Lifting and Lowering: Usually caused by a lack of lubrication or loose components, requiring inspection of moving parts for dryness or loose screws.
  3. Loose/Detached Connections: Simply tighten the connecting screws to restore stability.

II. Targeted Repair Measures

  1. Sealing Issues: Invert the chair, disassemble the connection between the hydraulic rod and the seat, and check if the sealing rubber ring is aged or damaged. If damaged, replace it with a compatible rubber ring and reassemble to ensure sealing.
  2. Control Valve Failure: Clean impurities inside the valve with a cotton swab. If normal lifting and lowering still cannot be achieved, replace the valve with a new one (matching the original model).
  3. Insufficient Hydraulic Pressure or Air Pressure:
    • Pneumatic: Replace with a genuine nitrogen cylinder (avoid using low-purity gases to prevent explosion risks).
    • Hydraulic: If oil leaks, directly replace the hydraulic rod (topping up oil is ineffective and poses a risk of oil leakage pollution).
  4. Lack of Lubrication: Drip professional hydraulic oil or lubricating oil onto the moving parts of the hydraulic rod, repeatedly lift and lower the chair to evenly distribute the oil and reduce friction.
  5. Loose Components: Tighten all loose screws with a wrench, especially at the connections between the hydraulic rod and the seat and the wheel frame.
  6. Other Component Failures:
    • Stuck Connector: Spray lubricating oil to release piston sticking; if ineffective, disassemble and clean debris or replace the piston.
    • Failed Spring: Check if the spring is broken or deformed, and replace it with a spring of the same specification to restore elasticity.

III. Replacing the Hydraulic Rod/Cylinder

  1. Lift the chair to its highest position and gently tap the connection between the seat and the wheel frame with a hammer to loosen the old hydraulic rod (lubricant can be applied to resistant areas beforehand).
  2. After removing the old hydraulic rod, insert the new rod and ensure it is securely installed, noting that the specifications and model must match the original chair (refer to the parameters of the old rod or contact after-sales service).

IV. Safety Precautions

  1. Place the chair on a stable surface before repairing to avoid collapse and injury.
  2. Avoid violent disassembly to prevent cylinder explosion or hydraulic oil splashing (pneumatic cylinders have high internal pressure and require careful operation).
  3. If self-repair is not possible, it is recommended to contact the brand's after-sales service or a professional repair technician and use genuine parts to ensure safety.

V. Temporary Solutions

If immediate repair is not possible, use a wooden board or zip ties to fix the chair at a suitable height, but long-term use still requires professional repair to avoid safety hazards.

Preventive Measures: Sit and rise gently during daily use, avoid jumping or applying lateral forces; check the hydraulic pressure and cylinder sealing every six months to extend the service life.
