The Office Chair is Uneven
Admin October 11, 2026
An uneven office chair can be fixed by checking the chair legs, structural connections, gas lift or base, and the floor condition, and then making targeted repairs.

Chair Leg Issues
- Check the Wheels: Place the chair upright and ensure each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. Invert the chair to inspect each wheel foot for signs of damage. If a wheel foot is bent, deformed, or broken, purchase a new set of matching wheels to replace all of them.
- Adjust the Height of the Chair Legs: For chairs with height adjustment features, use the adjustment knobs under the legs to adjust the height of each foot individually until the chair is stable and does not wobble.
- Add Matching Gaskets: If a single chair leg is slightly shorter, cut a hard gasket that matches the size of the bottom of the chair leg, such as a thick rubber pad or hard plastic sheet, and place it under the shorter chair leg.
- Repair or Replace the Chair Legs: For deformed wooden chair legs, replace them with new ones of the same specifications and secure them with screws or adhesive. For deformed metal chair legs, straighten them and then tighten the screws.
Structural Connection Issues
- Tighten the Screws: Check the screws at the structural connections of the chair, such as the frame and crossbeams, for looseness. Tighten all loose screws.
- Reinforce the Mortise-and-Tenon Joints: If the mortise-and-tenon joints of a wooden chair are loose, insert thin wooden wedges dipped in white glue into the joints, wipe off the excess glue, and let it dry to make the structure more stable.
Gas Lift or Base Issues
- Handle the Gas Lift: If the gas lift is damaged and causes the chair to lean to one side, first lift the chair to keep the chair legs off the ground. Use a rubber mallet to strike the chair legs from top to bottom until the rubber joint is reached. When disassembling, first remove the chair legs, then invert the chair, hold the gas lift, and strike the base until it falls off. Then replace the gas lift. If the hydraulic rod cannot rise, it may be due to internal blockage or insufficient hydraulic oil. Clean the pipeline or add special hydraulic oil. If it cannot lower, the spring may be broken and needs to be replaced.
- Replace the Base: A broken or aged base, or a loose connection at the five-star foot, can cause the chair to wobble or even tilt. Consider replacing the base.
Floor Issues
- Adjust the Floor or Chair Legs: If the floor where the chair is placed is uneven, use rubber pads to elevate the shorter leg(s). Alternatively, use an angle grinder or 80-grit sandpaper to sand down the longer chair legs, using the chair surface as a level reference to adjust the leg length. A more convenient option is to use adjustable feet, which can be screwed onto the bottom of the chair and rotated to fine-tune the height to fit different floors.
