The Office Chair Cushion Has Collapsed

Admin October 10, 2026

The root cause of the collapse of an office chair cushion is the reduction in elasticity and loss of support of the filling material, which is a phenomenon of mechanical fatigue (aging) after long-term compression. Repair or handling should be selected based on the degree of collapse, and daily prevention can extend its service life.

I. Repair Methods for Mild Collapse (Local sagging < 1 cm)

  1. Patting and Kneading: Gently pat or knead the collapsed area to promote the recovery of the่“ฌๆพ (fluffiness) of the internal filling (such as sponge or fiber), suitable for local deformation caused by long-term compression.
  2. Adjusting the Mesh Structure: If it is a mesh cushion, check whether the screws or straps at the bottom are loose. Restore support by tightening the screws or re-tensioning the straps to avoid sagging due to structural looseness.
  3. Adding Bottom Support: Place cardboard or thin plywood (about 0.5-1 cm thick) under the cushion to disperse pressure and enhance overall support, suitable for cases where the filling has not completely failed.
  4. Drying and Ventilating: If the collapse is caused by moisture (such as a humid environment or liquid infiltration), move the chair to a well-ventilated area to dry naturally (avoid direct sunlight) to prevent further deformation of the material.
  5. Re-filling the Material: Open the outer fabric of the cushion and replace it with high-density sponge (density 40-50 kg/mยณ) or memory foam. These materials have strong support and durability, suitable for scenarios where the filling has severely aged.

II. Handling of Severe Collapse (Sagging after sitting, complete loss of support)

If the collapse depth exceeds 2 cm or is accompanied by structural damage (such as broken springs or deformed bottom plates), the cushion or the entire chair needs to be replaced. When purchasing, focus on the following:

  • Sponge Parameters: Choose a sponge with a density of โ‰ฅ40 kg/mยณ and a thickness of โ‰ฅ5 cm. A moderate hardness (such as 45-55 Shore C) can balance comfort and support.
  • Functional Adaptation: If it is an electrically adjustable or heated chair, prioritize contacting the brand's after-sales service for repair to avoid damaging the circuit by disassembling it yourself.
  • Load-Bearing Matching: Heavy users (such as those > 90 kg) need to choose a chair with a load-bearing capacity of โ‰ฅ150 kg to reduce the speed of material fatigue.

III. Daily Prevention and Health Suggestions

  1. Avoid Leaning on One Side: Maintain a neutral body position when sitting for a long time to reduce continuous pressure on one side of the cushion and prevent excessive local deformation.
  2. Using Auxiliary Cushions: If the original cushion has collapsed and has not been replaced yet, you can stack a 3-5 cm thick memory foam or gel cushion (preferably a model with a hollow design in the middle) to disperse the pressure on the ischial bones and improve the feeling.
  3. Regular Movement: Get up and move for 1-2 minutes every 30 minutes to promote blood circulation and reduce continuous pressure on the cushion.
