The Cracked Casters of Office Chairs
Admin October 10, 2026
If the casters of an office chair are cracked, you can first determine the type of damage and then take repair or replacement measures according to different situations. Details are as follows:

Determining the Type of Damage
- Wheel Wear: Check the surface of the wheel. If there are deep grooves or other obvious signs of wear on rubber wheels, it may be due to long-term use.
- Wheel Deformation: Examine the shape of the wheel. If it appears elliptical or has other irregular shapes, it is deformed.
- Loose or Damaged Connection Parts: Check the connection points between the wheel and the chair, such as whether the screws are loose or missing, or whether the connecting components are broken.
Corresponding Repair Methods
- Wheel Wear: If the wear is minor, you can continue to use it for a while. If the wear seriously affects use, purchase new wheels that match the size for replacement. When replacing, first turn the chair upside down, find the screws or clips that secure the wheels, use the appropriate tools to unscrew the screws or open the clips, remove the old wheels, and then install the new wheels and tighten the screws or close the clips.
- Wheel Deformation: It is basically impossible to repair, and you can only replace it with new wheels. Choose wheels of the appropriate size to ensure a good fit.
- Loose or Damaged Connection Parts: If the screws are loose, simply tighten them. If the connecting components are broken, find suitable materials such as wooden boards or metal plates with similar thickness and material to make new connecting components. First, fix them with glue, and then reinforce them with iron wires or thin metal strips.
Replacing Damaged Universal Wheels (Specific Operations)
- Confirm the Wheel Type: Turn the chair upside down and observe the connection method of the damaged wheel. There are mainly two types: threaded and plug-in.
- Remove the Old Universal Wheels: For threaded wheels, unscrew them counterclockwise by hand or with the help of tools. For plug-in wheels, use both hands to firmly grip the wheel (or use pliers), press down while rotating left and right, and use the elastic deformation to release the snap ring and then pull it out.
- Install the New Universal Wheels: Purchase new wheels to ensure that the model, size, and load capacity match the old ones. For threaded wheels, align the new wheel with the hole and screw it in clockwise and tighten it. For plug-in wheels, align the plug of the new wheel with the base hole of the chair leg and insert it vertically with force. A "click" sound indicates that the snap ring is securely in place.
Other Precautions
- If it is difficult to purchase replacement wheel feet separately, you can contact the manufacturer to order matching wheel foot sets, or take the old wheels to an office supplies store to find matching replacement sets.
- Apply a small amount of spray lubricant or petroleum jelly to the socket on the chair base to make it easier to install the new wheels.
- Use a rubber mallet to tap the casters into the chair socket to reduce the risk of deformation or breakage of the new casters.
