What to Do If the Office Chair Is Not Hard Enough

Admin October 14, 2026

If your office chair is not hard enough, you can make targeted adjustments using the following methods:

1. Use an Air Cushion for Auxiliary Adjustment

An air cushion is a convenient tool for quickly improving firmness. Its core principle is to achieve adjustable softness or hardness through manual inflation by pressing, and it supports one-click deflation, allowing you to adjust the sitting feel at any time according to your needs. The 4.5cm golden thickness design provides sufficient support without affecting sitting posture stability due to excessive thickness. When using it, pay attention to the amount of inflation to avoid over-inflation causing the cushion edges to curl up or the support force to disperse. It is recommended to inflate in stages and test-sit to adjust to a comfortable state.

2. Handle According to the Chair Material

1. Fabric Chairs: Repair the Sponge Filling Layer
Fabric chairs often become soft due to long-term compression and collapse of the internal sponge. For local collapse, you can open the cushion cover, remove the old sponge, and cut a piece of high-density sponge (with a recommended density of โ‰ฅ45kg/mยณ) that matches the size to replace the original filling layer. If the old sponge still has elasticity, you can fluff it up by kneading and then fill the collapsed area with loose sponge scraps before re-sewing the cover. If the entire chair is soft, you can attach a 2-3cm thick layer of thin memory foam to the inside of the cushion and backrest. Its slow rebound property can enhance support and disperse body pressure.

2. Leather/Faux Leather Chairs: Care for the Leather and Fillings
The softening of leather chairs may be caused by surface aging or compression of the internal fillings. If the leather is dry and hard, first clean the surface dust and stains with a soft cloth, then apply a special leather care oil (preferably containing natural wax) along the grain. After letting it sit for 12-24 hours, the leather will gradually soften. If the internal fillings are locally collapsed, you can open the side hidden stitches, insert an appropriate amount of cashmere wool or silk floss (the filling amount should be such that the original sitting height is restored by 1-2cm), and then gently sew the stitches back to avoid pulling and deforming the leather.

3. Chairs with Spring Structures: Reset the Springs or Replace the Soft Pack
Spring displacement or reduced elasticity is a common cause of softening in such chairs. If the cushion is too soft, you can turn the screws that fix the springs under the cushion to return the displaced springs to their original positions. If the backrest is too soft, you can temporarily add a lumbar support that fits the curvature of your back (it is recommended that the height covers the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae). For a long-term solution, you can directly replace the soft pack layer of the backrest, choosing high-rebound sponge or adding a wooden support layer to enhance firmness.

After adjustment, test-sit for 1-2 weeks to observe whether the support is even and avoid muscle fatigue caused by local excessive hardness. If the chair has been in use for more than 5 years and the structure is severely aged, it is recommended to directly replace it with a new chair to ensure safety and comfort.
