The Office Chair is Loose
Admin October 09, 2026
If the office chair is loose, it can be resolved by identifying the loose parts and making targeted repairs. Here are the specific methods:

I. Identifying the Loose Parts
- Backrest Recline Test: If there is significant shaking and a clicking sound when reclining, it is likely that the adjustment rod screws are not tightened properly. If the backrest has weak rebound, it may be due to aging of the spring or gas lift rod.
- Observing the Gaps at the Connections: Use a phone flashlight to check for obvious gaps at the connection below the backrest to determine if they are caused by loose components.
- Checking the Seat Cushion and Frame: If the seat cushion is soft and sinks, it is necessary to confirm whether it is due to spring deformation, loss of elasticity of the sponge, or loose frame connections.
II. Targeted Repair Solutions
- Loose Adjustment Rod Screws Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise. After exposing the metal bracket, use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one (operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force).
- Spring Detachment Find the spring pin at the bottom of the backrest and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure its length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (price range: approximately 5-15 yuan).
- Excessive Gap in the Gas Lift Rod Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, find the adjustment knob of the gas lift rod (a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise. Test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ and gradually increase the support force.
- Loose Screws and Connectors Use a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench to tighten the screws connecting the backrest and the base clockwise. If the screw hole is stripped, fill it with toothpicks and wood glue or replace it with a larger diameter screw.
- Adjusting the Recline Resistance Most office chairs have a round knob or a slide at the bottom. Rotate the knob counterclockwise or push the slide to the maximum resistance position. Sit on the chair, recline, and test it, and repeatedly adjust it to a suitable state.
III. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques
If you don't have professional tools, you can make temporary repairs: Cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm wide strips and wrap them around the joint between the backrest and the base to increase friction. Or use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift rod to limit the shaking amplitude and maintain stability for 3-7 days.
IV. Handling Other Situations
- Deformation of Spring-Structured Chairs: Turn the chair over, unscrew the seat screws, remove the cover, and use pliers to repair the deformed spring or replace the broken one. Fix it with thin steel wire and then reinstall it.
- Repairing Soft Chairs with Sponge Cushions: For chairs with removable seats, take out the old sponge and place a 2-5cm high-elastic sponge on top for filling. If the sponge has lost its elasticity, replace it with a new one of the same size and sew the cover back to restore its fullness.
- Reinforcing Loose Frames: Tighten all the connecting screws. If the mortise and tenon joints of solid wood are loose, inject white glue and press them tightly to fix them. Let them sit for one day before use. For non-removable one-piece upholstered chairs, contact a professional repair technician.
