Office Chair Has a Rancid Smell

Admin October 14, 2026

The rancid smell of an office chair can be resolved through quick emergency measures, deep cleaning, and daily preventive actions. Here are the specific methods:

Quick Emergency Deodorization Methods

  • Strong Ventilation: Move the chair to a well-ventilated location, such as a balcony or near a window, and open the doors and windows to create air convection. If the chair is made of fabric or mesh, it can be briefly exposed to sunlight on a sunny day to accelerate the volatilization of odor molecules using sunlight and wind. Be careful to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can cause material aging.
  • Activated Carbon/Bamboo Charcoal Adsorption: Place activated carbon bags around, beneath, or on the seat of the chair. Their porous structure can effectively adsorb odor molecules, formaldehyde, and moisture in the air. It is recommended to replace the activated carbon every 1-2 weeks to maintain effectiveness.
  • White Vinegar Solution Wiping: Dilute white vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2, dip a soft towel into the solution, wring it out until it is half-dry, and wipe the surface of the seat (avoid allowing the liquid to seep inside). Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline odors and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a clean water-dampened towel to wipe again and open the windows for ventilation. Be cautious when using on genuine or artificial leather materials; test in an inconspicuous area first.
  • Use Professional Deodorizers: Choose car interior deodorizing sprays or fabric disinfecting deodorizers. Before spraying according to the instructions, test in a small area at the corner of the chair to confirm no damage or staining occurs before full use. Prioritize products with mild ingredients and no irritating odors.

Deep Cleaning and Deodorization

  • General Cleaning Method: First, use a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush to remove surface dust. Choose a cleaning agent based on the material: use diluted neutral detergent for mesh or fabric; use a dedicated leather cleaner for genuine or artificial leather (test in an inconspicuous area first). After cleaning, dry thoroughly and avoid exposure to sunlight, which can cause material aging and cracking.
  • Baking Soda Usage:
    • Dry Method (Odor Absorption): Sprinkle baking soda powder evenly over the dry seat surface, let it sit for 3-4 hours or overnight, and then vacuum it up.
    • Wet Method (Stain Removal): For stubborn stains that have penetrated (such as soup spills), dissolve baking soda in water to make a paste or solution, apply it to the stain, and then clean.

Daily Preventive Measures

  • Regular Cleaning: Move the chair outside for airing and wipe its surface with a mild detergent at regular intervals to keep it clean and hygienic.
  • Choose Breathable Materials: When purchasing, prioritize chairs with good breathability to help sweat evaporate faster and reduce odor production.
  • Maintain Personal Hygiene: Change into clean clothes before going to work every day to reduce sweat secretion and lower the likelihood of odor production.
