The Squeaking Sound of the Office Chair When Shaken

Admin October 08, 2026

The squeaking sound of an office chair when shaken is usually caused by worn accessories, loose connectors, or aging components, and can be resolved by tightening the accessories or replacing the aging parts.

1. Worn Office Chair Accessories

The seat and backrest of an office chair are fixed with screws. After long-term use, the screws may loosen due to frequent shaking or weight-bearing, resulting in small gaps between components. In addition, the natural aging of accessories (such as the embrittlement of plastic parts and the fatigue of metal parts) can also reduce structural stability and trigger abnormal noises. Solutions:

  • Use a screwdriver or wrench to check the fixing screws of the seat and backrest, and tighten them one by one, especially at the connections between the chassis and the chair legs, and between the gas lift and the five-star base.
  • If cracks or deformations (such as broken plastic frames or bent metal brackets) are found in the accessories, replace them with the same model in a timely manner. Prioritize wear-resistant and anti-aging materials (such as thickened metal or high-strength plastic) to extend the service life.

2. Loose Connectors

The backrest, armrests, chassis, chair legs, and other components of an office chair are fixed with screws or nuts. Long-term weight-bearing or frequent angle adjustments can cause the fasteners to loosen. For example, if the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base is not tightened, friction and collision between components during shaking will produce sounds. Solutions:

  • Regularly (every 3-6 months) conduct a comprehensive inspection of all connection points of the chair, including the fixing points between the armrests and the seat, and the interface between the chassis and the gas lift. Use tools to tighten loose screws or nuts.
  • If the screws are stripped or the nuts are worn, replace them with matching fasteners to avoid repeated abnormal noises caused by insufficient fixation.

3. Worn and Aging Components

The contact position between the gas lift and the chassis or the five-star base may wear out gaps due to long-term weight-bearing; the aging and deformation of the plastic frame (such as a bent backrest) can cause components to fit loosely; the displacement or collapse of the filling material (such as sponge) inside the seat can cause it to collide with the metal frame and produce noise. Solutions:

  • Apply a small amount of lubricating grease (such as silicone grease) to the contact surface between the gas lift and the chassis to reduce friction; if the wear is severe, replace the gas lift or the chassis.
  • When the plastic frame ages and deforms, replace the entire frame or reinforce it locally; if the filling material collapses, remove the seat fabric, refill it with high-density sponge or memory foam, and fix the inner lining fabric well to avoid direct contact with the frame.

By systematically investigating and addressing the issues in a targeted manner, the abnormal noise problem of the office chair can be effectively eliminated, and the comfort of use can be restored.
