The Office Chair Cannot Rotate

Admin October 14, 2026

If your office chair cannot rotate, try the following solutions:

1. Check and clean the wheels and foreign objects After long-term use, hair, threads, pet fur, or carpet fibers may become entangled around the wheel axles, causing them to jam. Tilt or lay the chair down and inspect each wheel individually. Use your hands, tweezers, or the tip of scissors to remove any entangled objects. If the floor is covered with an excessively thick or rough carpet, the increased resistance may make rotation difficult. Temporarily move the chair to a smooth surface for testing.

2. Check and tighten screws and connectors Frequent rotation or heavy loads may cause screws to loosen. Focus on inspecting two areas:

  • Connection screws between the five-star base and the central rotating plate: Located at the bottom of the rotating plate, use a Phillips or Allen wrench to tighten them moderately, avoiding over-tightening that could strip the threads.
  • Fixed screws on the wheel mounting brackets: Inspect and tighten each one individually. If the chair uses clips or small screws to secure the rotating plate to the seat, check if the clips have shifted or if the screws are loose. Locate the connection point beneath the rotating plate and adjust the clip position or tighten the screws.

3. Lubricate moving parts

  • Rotating plate bearings: After prolonged use, dried-up grease or dust intrusion may cause rust and jamming. Spray WD-40 multi-purpose lubricant into the gap between the rotating plate and the base. After penetration, rotate the chair left and right to help the lubricant spread. Wait a few minutes, then wipe off any excess oil and test for smooth rotation.
  • Other moving parts: If rotation remains difficult after cleaning, apply lubricating oil to the bearings or shafts. Temporarily, you can use 1-2 drops of cooking oil, but sewing machine oil or specialized mechanical lubricating oil works better. Apply 1 drop each to the gap at the center of the rotating plate and the bearing area, manually rotate the base a few times, and let it sit for 2 minutes before testing. If the chair's central shaft lacks oil, use a syringe or oil pot to inject an appropriate amount of sewing machine oil into the center shaft, then rotate the chair to ensure the oil fully lubricates the interior.

4. Check the gas cylinder If the gas cylinder is bent, deformed, or leaking, it may cause rotation issues or abnormal height adjustment. For such problems, contact a professional repair technician to replace the gas cylinder. Do not attempt to disassemble it yourself, as improper handling could lead to safety hazards.
