The Odor of Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The odor of office chairs mainly stems from the materials, usage environment, and improper cleaning and maintenance, and can be removed through targeted methods.

Sources of Odor

  1. Material Issues
Plastic or faux leather chairs may release unpleasant odors due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the materials themselves, such as chemicals in adhesives and coatings that continue to volatilize after the chair is manufactured. Fillers like foam and sponge may also emit unpleasant odors due to their material properties.

  2. Usage Environment
Damp and enclosed environments can cause chairs to absorb surrounding odors, especially when ventilation is poor, leading to the growth of bacteria or mold and the production of musty odors. For example, if the interior of a computer chair is not thoroughly dried after cleaning, mold metabolites can penetrate the material and form stubborn musty odors.

  3. Inadequate Cleaning and Maintenance
If fabric or leather chairs are not cleaned for a long time, the accumulation of dust, dirt, and bacteria can cause odors. Residues from cleaning agents or incomplete drying during the cleaning process can also introduce chemical odors.

Removal Methods

  1. For Odors After Cleaning

    • Strong Ventilation: Move the chair to a balcony or near a window to accelerate the volatilization of odors through air convection. Fabric or mesh materials can be briefly exposed to sunlight.
    • Activated Carbon Adsorption: Place activated carbon packs around the chair to adsorb odor molecules, formaldehyde, and moisture using their porous structure. Replace them regularly.
    • Vinegar Wiping: Dilute white vinegar or rice vinegar with water in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio, dip a soft towel into the solution, and wipe the seat surface. Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline odors and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a damp cloth with clean water to wipe again and ventilate.
    • Specialized Deodorizers: Use car interior deodorizing sprays or fabric disinfectants. Test on a small area first to ensure no damage before spraying.
  2. For Stubborn Odors or Stains

    • Deep Cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove dust, hair, and debris. For mesh chairs, gently pat the edges to dislodge dust trapped in the seams. For ordinary stains, wipe with diluted cleaning solution or soapy water. For mildew or stubborn stains, spray with a specialized mildew remover or strong cleaner, gently brush with a soft-bristled brush, and let it sit for half an hour to decompose the mildew.
  3. For New Leather Office Chairs

    • Ventilation and Volatilization: Place the chair in a well-ventilated area to accelerate the volatilization of VOCs. Generally, the odor willๅ‡่ฝป (lessen) after about a week of ventilation.
    • Auxiliary Adsorption: Place activated carbon, orange peels, or green tea leaves near the chair, or use carbon packs or deodorizers to adsorb odors.
