The Most Comfortable Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

There is no absolute standard for the most comfortable height of an office chair, but it generally falls between 40 and 50 centimeters. Currently, most office chairs on the market have heights ranging from 450mm to 500mm, with the specific height requiring adjustment based on an individual's height and usage scenario.

I. General Reference Heights For most adults, there are gender-based reference heights: men commonly use 43 centimeters as a baseline, while women typically use 42 centimeters. These figures are based on ergonomic research, balancing average height and sitting comfort, but should only be used as initial reference values for adjustment.

II. Height-Specific Recommendations The adjustment range for people of different heights should follow the principle of "feet flat on the ground, legs perpendicular":

  • For individuals who are 160 centimeters tall: It is recommended that the chair height be set between 42 and 43 centimeters to ensure that both feet are fully in contact with the ground when seated, with the thighs and lower legs forming a 90-degree angle to avoid leg suspension or excessive bending.
  • For those who are 165 centimeters tall: A chair height of 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable, as this range can accommodate the leg length proportions of people in this height range and maintain the natural curve of the spine.
  • For individuals who are 170 centimeters tall: The optimal chair height is 45 to 47 centimeters. Too high a chair will prevent the feet from resting flat on the ground, while too low a chair may compress the blood vessels and nerves behind the knees.

III. Key Adjustment Principles

  1. Dynamic Adaptability: Prioritize selecting an office chair with adjustable height, allowing precise adjustments via a pneumatic rod or mechanical structure to accommodate different heights, sitting habits, and desk heights.
  2. Coordination with Desk Height: The desk height should be level with the elbows (approximately 74 to 78 centimeters). At this point, the chair height needs to be adjusted accordingly so that the arms hang naturally with the elbows at a 90-degree angle, reducing shoulder and neck strain.
  3. Comprehensive Reference Values: The most comfortable combination of desk and chair heights is a desk height of 780 millimeters and a chair height of 480 millimeters. However, the final judgment should be based on the criteria of "feet flat on the ground, legs perpendicular, and desk and elbows level" rather than fixed values.

IV. Adjustments for Special Scenarios If the office scenario involves prolonged typing or drawing, the chair height can be slightly adjusted so that the wrists are level with the desktop to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. If frequent standing while working is required, a chair model with a wider height adjustment range should be selected to ensure correct posture when switching between sitting and standing.
