The Making of Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

The production process of office chairs includes steps such as frame making, spring and support structure installation, leather cutting and processing, cushion and backrest making, frame wrapping and decoration, functional component installation, and final assembly.

Frame Making: Workers first place square steel tubes into a hydraulic press to bend them into square base frames with rounded corners at the four corners. Then, they weld the support steel plates to the frame openings. For swivel office chairs, a sturdy base is welded, and steel springs are installed from the front, with support brackets placed between the springs. After completing the seat frame, the backrest frame is welded.

Spring and Support Structure Installation: S-shaped springs are hooked onto the frame, and three support steel bars are connected to the springs in opposite directions to complete the internal structure of the base cushion.

Leather Cutting and Processing: Workers place plastic templates for parts such as headrests and armrests on the leather and use a utility knife to cut out black leather according to the template patterns. For swivel office chairs, workers flatten the leather on a cutting table, cut the leather according to the template, and also cut foam blocks. The foam density varies across the chair; soft foam provides cushioning, while hard foam is used for shaping. The leather is then divided according to size and sewn together with the foam.

Cushion and Backrest Making: The leather is glued onto a relatively hard foam cushion, and a slightly larger foam pad is cut according to the leather size to make the cushion and backrest. For a softer, fluffier foam pad, it is first cut into a large square and then cut into connected rectangles at measured intervals. Marks are made on the leather at the same intervals, and it is pleated and sewn to form the basic shape of the backrest's leather surface. Then, the cushion leather and decorations are sewn together.

Frame Wrapping and Decoration: The surface of the metal frame is wrapped with foam padding, and the sewn leather cover is placed over it for decoration. The cover plate and frame are fixed with screws.

Functional Component Installation: Adjustable-height armrests, hydraulic rods, gas cylinders, and seat bottom support rods are assembled with the metal base to ensure the office chair can be freely raised and lowered. For swivel office chairs, a hydraulic rod for the lifting valve seat is installed to control the lifting and rotation. Finally, an aluminum base and casters are attached.

Final Assembly: The chair wheels are installed at the bottom, and the headrest and armrests are inserted into specific positions. For swivel office chairs, a plastic cover plate is screwed on underneath after assembly. The base, support rods, and support plate are attached, and finally, the headrest and armrest parts are installed.
