The Discomfort of Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

The core reasons for the discomfort of office chairs include compromises between design and cost, lack of adjustable features, and improper material selection, with shared office chairs facing more prominent issues due to imbalances between cost and versatility.

1. Compromises between Design and Cost Lead to Poor Fit Most office chairs adopt a one-size-fits-all design, yet there are significant differences in human body curves. To control costs, factories often choose fixed-angle backrest frames and fail to provide segmented support for the lumbar and back regions. For example, women's average sitting height is 4-8 cm lower than men's, but 70% of chairs on the market have a fixed lumbar support height of 23 cm (suitable for men who are 175 cm tall), causing misalignment of the lumbar support position for people under 160 cm tall and forcing the spine to adapt to the chair rather than receiving support. This one-size-fits-all design directly reduces comfort.

2. Lack of Adjustable Features Exacerbates Physical Strain The lumbar support height adjustment feature is only available in 25% of chairs priced under 1,000 yuan, and four-way adjustment (up and down, forward and backward) is even rarer. The synchronized backrest tilt feature is mostly found in mid-to-high-end products. In ordinary chairs, when the backrest reclines, the seat surface does not move forward in tandem, instead increasing abdominal compression, which can easily lead to lumbar muscle strain with long-term use. Additionally, the lack of height and angle adjustment for armrests can cause the arms to hang in the air or create tension in the shoulders and neck, further reducing comfort.

3. Improper Material Selection Affects Health and Experience When purchasing office chairs, companies often overlook functionality. For example, if the density of polyurethane foam material is below 45 kg/mยณ, it will lose its elasticity after six months and fail to provide continuous support. The local pressure peak on mesh chairs can reach 40 kPa (exceeding the human tolerance threshold of 20 kPa), causing numbness in the buttocks after two hours of sitting due to capillary compression. The backrests of faux leather chairs increase back perspiration by 2-3 times in summer, and the hot and humid environment accelerates fatigue. These material issues directly lead to discomfort during prolonged sitting.

4. The 'Triangle Imbalance' Problem of Shared Office Chairs Seats in shared spaces need to balance cost, versatility, and durability, but often fall out of balance due to excessive cost-cutting. For example, seats lacking height and depth adjustment have an adaptability rate of less than 30% for users with a height difference of over 20 cm. Cheap synthetic leather or tightly woven fabrics have poor breathability, being hot in summer and cold in winter. Over 45% of seats further exacerbate discomfort due to a lack of key adjustable features or severe wear and tear. This 'functional but uncomfortable' design is the main cause of discomfort in shared office chairs.
