What is the Appropriate Height Adjustment for Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

The appropriate height of an office chair should be determined comprehensively based on national standards, individual height, and usage principles. Generally, it should be adjusted within the range of 40-50 centimeters, specifically meeting the core requirement of 'feet flat on the ground and thighs perpendicular to calves'.

I. National Standards and Product Adjustment Range

According to the provisions of GB3326-1997, the standard range for the seat height of office chairs is 400-440 millimeters (i.e., 40-44 centimeters). However, due to design differences, the adjustment range of mainstream products on the market can be extended to 360-480 millimeters (36-48 centimeters). This range covers the usage needs of most adults, but the specific height requires further adjustment based on individual characteristics.

II. Gender-Based Reference for Benchmark Heights

For most adults, gender differences can serve as a basis for initial adjustment:

  • Men: The commonly used benchmark height is 43 centimeters. This value is close to the upper limit of the national standard and is suitable for individuals with a taller build or longer legs.
  • Women: The commonly used benchmark height is 41 centimeters, which is slightly lower than the male benchmark and aligns with the physiological characteristics of women having a lower average height.
It should be noted that benchmark heights are only for reference, and actual adjustment should be based on individual comfort.

III. Specific Adjustment Recommendations Based on Height

Height is a key factor in determining chair height. The following are recommended ranges for common heights:

  • Height of 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust to 42-43 centimeters to avoid a forward-leaning posture due to a chair that is too low or leg suspension due to a chair that is too high.
  • Height of 165 centimeters: A height of 43-45 centimeters is suitable, as this range can balance leg support and desktop operation needs.
  • Height of 170 centimeters: The optimal height is 45-47 centimeters, ensuring that the thighs and calves are perpendicular to each other and reducing lumbar spine pressure.
If the height exceeds or falls below the above range, adjustments can be made flexibly according to the principle of 'adjusting the chair height by 1-2 centimeters for every 5-centimeter increase or decrease in height'.

IV. Core Principle of Adjustment: Lower Limb Posture

Regardless of height, the core principle of adjusting the height of an office chair is to sit with feet flat on the ground and thighs perpendicular to calves.

  • If the chair is too high, the inability of the feet to touch the ground will cause leg suspension, increasing pressure on the front thigh muscles.
  • If the chair is too low, knees higher than the hips will force the pelvis to tilt backward, leading to excessive lumbar spine curvature.
When adjusting, first sit on the chair, observe the lower limb posture, and gradually adjust to the ideal state through the pneumatic rod or mechanical device.
