Telescopic Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 11, 2026

Telescopic office chairs (adjustable chairs) pose an explosion risk, primarily due to design and usage issues with the gas spring, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. This risk can be mitigated through proper selection and correct usage.

Explosion Causes: Design Flaws and Improper Operation of Gas Springs

The gas spring is the core component of an adjustable chair, functioning as a high-pressure vessel typically filled with high-purity nitrogen to enable safe height adjustment. Some unscrupulous manufacturers cut costs by substituting nitrogen with ordinary compressed air, leading to oxidation reactions between oxygen and the metal inner wall. This causes the gas spring to rust, accumulate heat, and experience a continuous increase in internal pressure, ultimately potentially triggering an explosion. Additionally, substandard gas spring quality (e.g., insufficient wall thickness), aging (e.g., seal failure causing gas leakage), violent operations (e.g., sudden sitting or spinning generating friction heat), or environmental factors (e.g., summer sun exposure) can also serve as explosion triggers. National sampling inspections reveal that one out of every four office chairs has a non-compliant gas spring, highlighting industry-wide quality concerns.

Explosion Consequences: Severe Personal Injuries and High Incidence of Accidents

The direct consequences of an explosion are extremely gruesome. For instance, in 2013, Ms. Liu in Fujian Province was sitting on an adjustable chair while blow-drying her hair when the gas spring suddenly burst. A steel rod approximately 3 centimeters in diameter pierced her lower body, and numerous metal fragments were removed from her abdominal cavity. Similar incidents have occurred over forty times in the past decade, resulting in serious injuries in mild cases and life-threatening situations in severe ones, underscoring the gravity of the issue.

Preventive Measures: Proper Selection and Scientific Usage

  1. Verify Certification and Price During Selection: Prioritize gas springs with official certifications (e.g., SGS, TUV) and avoid purchasing low-priced products below 200 yuan, as these may use inferior materials due to cost-cutting measures.
  2. Avoid Dangerous Behaviors During Usage: Keep away from high-temperature sources like radiators to prevent abnormal pressure changes in the gas spring due to thermal expansion and contraction; avoid violent operations such as sudden sitting or spinning to reduce friction heat risks; and avoid prolonged exposure of the chair to direct sunlight in summer.
  3. Promptly Replace Problematic Chairs: If the chair exhibits unusual noises, wobbling, or stuttering during height adjustment, it may signal aging or damage to the gas spring. Immediately stop using the chair and replace it with a new one to prevent accidents.
