Taishi Chair and Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The Taishi chair is generally not used as a modern office chair; it is more of a seat with cultural symbolic significance in traditional Chinese furniture.

Origin and Early Forms

The Taishi chair is the only seat in traditional Chinese furniture named after an official position. Its origin can be traced back to the Northern Song Dynasty, and the name was first recorded in Gui Er Ji written by Zhang Duanyi in the Song Dynasty. Its origin is somewhat related to Qin Hui. Initially, it was in the form of a folding chair. At that time, Qin Hui leaned back in his seat, and his headscarf fell off. To prevent such incidents from happening again, Wu Yuan ordered craftsmen to add lotus-leaf headrests to the chair's armrests, and this type of chair was then called the "Taishi style." This unique origin story not only endowed the Taishi chair with special cultural connotations but also secured its place in traditional furniture.

Evolution in Different Periods

  • Ming Dynasty: During the Ming Dynasty, the form of the Taishi chair evolved and gradually became a round-backed armchair. The round-backed armchair was renowned for its unique armrest shape. The armrests had smooth lines and resembled wicker baskets, offering both practicality and artistic beauty. This evolution reflected the progress in Ming Dynasty furniture-making techniques and the pursuit of furniture aesthetics.
  • Qing Dynasty: In the Qing Dynasty, the Taishi chair took on the form of a screen-backed armchair. Its backrest, armrests, and seat were at right angles to each other, giving it a solemn and stable overall appearance. This design not only conformed to the aesthetic concepts of the time but also reflected the characteristics of Qing Dynasty furniture, which emphasized etiquette and hierarchical systems. Screen-backed armchairs were usually made of high-quality wood, with exquisite craftsmanship and ornate decorations. They were favored by Qing Dynasty nobles and literati.

Modern Applications

In modern society, due to its unique shape and cultural value, the Taishi chair is more often used in traditional home decor, classical culture exhibitions, and other settings to showcase the owner's cultural taste and aesthetic sensibilities. On the other hand, modern office chairs place greater emphasis on functionality, such as ergonomic design, adjustable height and angle, and comfortable seat cushions and backrests, to meet the needs of long hours of office work. Therefore, the Taishi chair is generally not used as a modern office chair.
