Swivel Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

A swivel office chair is a type of chair with a rotatable seat, belonging to the category of office chairs or computer chairs, and has various types, structural features, and purchasing considerations.

Types and Suitable Scenarios

Swivel office chairs are classified by function and scenario into work chairs, staff chairs, mid-back manager chairs, and executive chairs. Work chairs have a simple design and are suitable for daily office work; staff chairs focus on cost-effectiveness and are suitable for the workstations of ordinary employees; mid-back manager chairs usually come with headrests and adjustable armrests, suitable for middle-level managers; executive chairs emphasize comfort and luxury and are mostly used in executive offices. According to the rotation angle, they can be divided into semi-swivel chairs (90 degrees left and right) and full-swivel chairs (360-degree rotation), with the latter becoming the mainstream choice due to their higher flexibility.

Structure and Core Functions

Its structure typically includes a headrest, backrest, seat, armrests, gas lift support, swivel mechanism, and a five-star base with wheels. The core function of height adjustment relies on the gas cylinder: The high-pressure nitrogen inside generates elastic force through the difference in piston cross-sectional areas, supporting the user's weight and adjusting the height, which can be locked at any position. Some high-end models are also equipped with lumbar support adjustment, seat depth adjustment, or synchronous tilt functions to adapt to different body types and usage needs.

Assembly Process

Taking a common model as an example, the assembly steps are as follows:

  1. Install the wheels and base: Press the wheels into the holes of the five-star base, snap on the plastic covers, and then insert the connecting rods;
  2. Assemble the backrest and handles: Place the backrest with the holes facing up, fix the handles with screws, and it is recommended to use an Allen wrench to tighten them quickly;
  3. Install the armrests and seat cushion: Insert short screws into the armrest accessories, then align the seat cushion with the holes in the base, fix it with four screws, and tighten the screws on the back of the seat cushion;
  4. Overall connection: Insert long screws through the holes in the base and the seat cushion to complete the final fixation.

Purchasing Considerations

  1. Adaptability: Choose the base shape (round or five-star swivel base) according to the space. High-back models are suitable for studies, and streamlined designs are suitable for studios;
  2. Quality evaluation: Focus on testing the seat feel (moderately soft or hard), wheel stability (smooth sliding without jamming), and the reliability of the gas cylinder (slow lifting and lowering without abnormal noises);
  3. Balance between price and functions: Prices range from a few dozen yuan to tens of thousands of yuan. It is recommended to choose models with basic adjustment functions (such as height adjustment and rotation) according to the budget and avoid paying a high premium for redundant functions.
