Making Office Chairs with SolidWorks (SW)
Admin October 13, 2026
There are no directly available complete steps for making office chairs using SolidWorks (SW), but you can draw on the modeling ideas for related chairs. Here is a general process and key points:

Preliminary Planning and Design
- Define Requirements: Determine the type of office chair, such as whether it has armrests, adjustable height, swivel functionality, as well as basic requirements like overall dimensions and style. For example, common office swivel chairs need to consider parameters such as base diameter, seat size, and backrest height to meet ergonomic and comfort needs.
- Collect Information: Refer to the structures and designs of similar office chairs on the market to understand the shapes, connection methods, and proportional relationships of their components. You can collect pictures of office chairs, product manuals, and other materials to provide intuitive references for modeling.
Modeling Process
- Create Basic Sketches: Select appropriate reference planes in SolidWorks, such as the front reference plane or top reference plane, and draw the basic outline sketches of the office chair components. For example, first draw the two-dimensional shape of the seat, which can be circular, rectangular, or other shapes that meet the design requirements, and label the key dimensions.
- Extrude or Rotate to Generate Solids: Based on the shape of the sketches, use feature commands such as extrude boss/base or revolve boss/base to convert the two-dimensional sketches into three-dimensional solids. For instance, extrude the sketch of the seat to form a seat solid with a certain thickness.
- Build Other Components: Follow the same method to create the backrest, armrests, chair legs, base, and other components of the office chair one by one. For some complex components, you may need to combine multiple feature commands, such as sweep and loft. For example, the shape of the chair legs may be complex, and you can use the sweep feature to generate them by sweeping a cross-section along a path.
- Assemble Components: Use the assembly function to assemble the individual components according to the design requirements. By adding mating relationships such as coincident, parallel, perpendicular, and concentric, ensure that the positions and connection relationships between the components are correct. For example, when assembling the seat and chair legs, add a concentric mating to accurately install the chair legs below the seat.
Post-Processing
- Check and Modify: Conduct a comprehensive check on the modeled office chair to see if there are any interferences, dimension errors, etc. If necessary, modify and optimize the model.
- Render and Present: You can use the rendering function in SolidWorks to add materials, colors, and lighting effects to the office chair model to make it more realistic. You can also generate rendered images or animations from different angles to present the design results.
