Can You Take an Office Chair on the Subway?

Admin October 19, 2026

Whether an office chair can be taken on the subway depends on the situation. Regular-sized and non-overweight office chairs can be carried, while oversized and overweight ones are prohibited. It is also not recommended to use them inside the subway car.

Carryable Situations

Generally, office chairs are not among the items strictly prohibited from being carried on the subway. As long as their size and weight are within a reasonable range, that is, not oversized or overweight, they can be taken on the subway. The term 'not oversized or overweight' is a relatively vague concept. Usually, if an office chair can easily pass through the subway security checkpoint and does not cause obvious obstruction or safety hazards to other passengers during the carrying process, it can be considered to meet the carrying requirements. For example, some common lightweight office chairs, which are moderately sized and weighted, can be easily carried onto the subway by passengers.

Prohibited Carrying Situations

If an office chair is oversized or overweight, it falls into the category of items strictly prohibited from being carried on the subway. This is because oversized and overweight office chairs not only take up a large amount of public space, affecting the normal passage and riding experience of other passengers, but may also pose a threat to passenger safety during subway operation. For instance, when the subway starts, brakes, or turns, oversized and overweight office chairs may move due to inertia, hitting other passengers or damaging subway equipment.

Not Recommended for Use Inside the Car

Although office chairs can be carried onto the subway, it is not recommended to use self-brought stools inside the subway car. On one hand, using self-brought stools takes up a large amount of public space, making the already crowded car even more cramped and affecting the standing and passage of other passengers. On the other hand, during subway operation, the car constantly shakes and jolts. Passengers using self-brought stools are prone to lose their balance and fall, causing harm to themselves or other passengers.
