Steps for Making Office Chairs in 3D

Admin October 08, 2026

The steps for making office chairs in 3D Max can be divided into five stages: basic modeling, component refinement, structural connection, detail optimization, and final rendering. The specific operations are as follows:

  1. Basic Modeling Preparation

    • Open the 3D Max software and adjust the view layout to a combination of top view, front view, and perspective view for multi-angle observation of the model.
    • Create cubes or rectangular prisms as the basic components of the chair. For example, use cubes to generate the initial shapes of the chair legs, seat cushion, and backrest, and determine the approximate proportions by adjusting the size parameters (such as length, width, and height).
  2. Component Refinement and Adjustment

    • Chair Legs: Convert the cube into an editable mesh (Editable Mesh) and use the 'Extrude' or 'Bevel' tools to adjust the shape, such as increasing the thickness of the legs through extrusion. If an arc is needed, add a 'Bend' modifier and set the angle parameters. After adjusting the chair legs, copy them and align their positions using the 'Mirror' tool or manual movement.
    • Seat Cushion: Based on the cube, apply the 'Shell Modifier' to increase the thickness and avoid a solid model. Use the 'TurboSmooth' or 'FFD Modifier' to adjust the curvature of the surface to make it more ergonomic.
    • Backrest: Create a rectangular prism with segment lines (such as 7 segments) and achieve the arc using the 'Bend' modifier. The number of segment lines affects the smoothness of the bend. If a symmetrical structure is needed, apply the 'Symmetry Modifier' or manually mirror and copy.
  3. Structural Connection and Symmetry Processing

    • Use the 'Mirror' tool to symmetrically copy components (such as the left and right chair legs) along the centerline to ensure structural balance.
    • Adjust the positional relationship between components. For example, align the top of the chair legs with the bottom of the seat cushion and achieve an interpenetrating structure through 'Boolean Operations' or manual vertex movement.
  4. Detail Optimization

    • Add fillets to the edges of the model. Use the 'Bevel' or 'Fillet Modifier' to handle sharp edges and corners to enhance the realism.
    • Adjust the local shape at the vertex level (Vertex Level). For example, optimize the curvature of the seat cushion edges or the fit of the backrest.
  5. Final Smoothing and Rendering

    • Apply the 'Smooth Group' or 'TurboSmooth Modifier' to unify the surfaces and reduce polygon edges.
    • Assign materials and adjust rendering parameters. Set corresponding materials for different components (such as metal chair legs and fabric seat cushions) and adjust the lighting and shadow parameters to enhance the three-dimensional effect.

Notes:

  • For complex structures (such as the arc of the backrest), segment lines should be added in advance; otherwise, distortion may occur during bending.
  • Different tutorials may adopt two methods: direct modeling or modifier stacking. Choose the more efficient method according to your needs.
