Steel Pipe Chair and Office Chair
Steel pipe chairs and office chairs each have distinct characteristics in office settings and cannot be simply equated. They differ in terms of material properties, design, and quality.

Material Properties
Steel pipe chairs are slightly weaker in strength compared to carbon steel chairs. If the user weighs over 150 jin (75 kg), there may be squeaking sounds during use. Moreover, steel pipes are relatively 'delicate' and prone to rust when exposed to water, which to some extent affects their durability. However, for inexpensive folding chairs used temporarily, steel pipe material offers a cost advantage, being about half the price of carbon steel. Office chairs, on the other hand, have a wider variety of material choices. They select appropriate materials based on different usage needs and positioning to ensure stability and durability, meeting the requirements of long-term office work.
Design Aspects
The world's first steel pipe chair, the Wassily Chair, has become an immortal design legend since its creation in 1925. It has stable strength and minimal wobbling. The seat cushion is higher at the front and lower at the back, a unique design that allows the buttocks to comfortably lean back without the body sliding forward. Its craftsmanship details are also exquisite, such as the use of hexagonal screws for connections, chrome-plating processes, and double-layer saddle leather stitching techniques, reflecting the coexistence of beauty and functionality. The design of office chairs focuses more on meeting the functional needs of office scenarios. For example, there are narrow and broad definitions. In the narrow sense, it refers to the backrest chairs used when people are sitting at a desk for work. In the broad sense, it includes all chairs used in offices, such as executive chairs and staff chairs. Different types are optimized in design for specific usage scenarios and user groups.
Quality Situation
Office chairs have some quality issues. Between 2023 and 2025, the United States, Canada, and the State Administration for Market Regulation in China implemented recalls on office chairs made in China. The recall reasons include potential backrest breakage, prominent stability issues, and possible bolt failures. Although steel pipe chairs also have material limitations, classic designs like the Wassily Chair excel in quality control and craftsmanship. However, overall, the quality performance of steel pipe chairs varies depending on the product type and purpose.
