Steel Office Chair Standards

Admin October 11, 2026

The standards for steel office chairs cover national standards, industry standards, and international standards, as detailed below:

National Standards

GB/T 3325 - 2017 'General Technical Conditions for Metal Furniture' sets out various requirements for metal office chairs. In terms of appearance quality, components should not have defects such as missed welds, burn-through, or misalignment, ensuring the overall completeness and aesthetic appeal of the office chair. Regarding dimensional tolerances, the maximum deviation for seat height is ยฑ10mm, ensuring that the seat height of the office chair fluctuates within a reasonable range to meet the needs of different usage scenarios and body sizes. In terms of physical and chemical properties, the coating's impact resistance requires that after impact testing, the coating should not have cracks or peeling, ensuring that the surface coating of the office chair can withstand a certain amount of external impact during daily use, thereby extending its service life. Mechanical properties require that the office chair's seat should be loaded with 750N for 10 minutes during the static load test, and after unloading, there should be no deformation or damage that affects use, demonstrating the stability and durability of the office chair when bearing a certain weight.

Industry Standards

QB/T 2280 - 2016 'Office Chairs' includes numerous provisions. The formaldehyde emission should be โ‰ค1.5mg/L, ensuring that the office chair does not release excessive harmful gases during use, thereby protecting the health of users. The adjustable range for the seat tilt angle is generally 0ยฐ - 20ยฐ, and the adjustable range for armrest height is 100mm - 200mm, meeting the needs of different users for different angles and heights of the office chair's seat and armrests, enhancing comfort during use. It also specifies indicators such as the density, resilience, and 75% compression permanent deformation of soft polyurethane foam, as well as clauses on stability, seat impact, vertical downward static load on armrests, horizontal static load on armrests, caster reciprocating wear, durability of the office chair's seat and backrest, TVOC, and basic safety, comprehensively ensuring the quality and safety of the office chair.

International Standards

ISO 9241 - 5:2017 'Ergonomics of human system interaction Part 5: Workstation and chair requirements' specifies from an ergonomic perspective that the seat height of office chairs should be adjustable within the range of 380mm - 530mm, and the backrest angle should be adjustable between 100ยฐ - 120ยฐ to ensure the comfort and health of users. BIFMA X5.1 - 2017 'American National Standard for Office Chairs General Purpose, Height Adjustable or Fixed Height' regulates the structural strength, durability, and safety of office chairs. For example, in structural strength testing, the armrests of the office chair should withstand a lateral force of 250 pounds (approximately 113.4kg) without damage; durability testing requires simulating 100,000 normal usage cycles.
