Standing Office Chair and Long Sitting

Admin October 14, 2026

Standing at an office chair for long periods does not fully counteract the harms of prolonged sitting, and simply standing statically also poses health risks.

Firstly, while standing desks can reduce sitting time, promote blood circulation, and alleviate back and shoulder-neck pain, prolonged static standing also comes with numerous issues. Maintaining a static standing posture for extended periods causes the skin temperature in the neck, back, and waist areas to continuously rise, with muscle load and tension constantly accumulating. This makes muscles highly prone to tension and fatigue. For example, some people using standing desks may notice significant neck stiffness and back soreness after long periods of standing, which are signs of muscle fatigue.

Secondly, standing in the same posture for a long time reduces skeletal muscle contractions, weakening the blood return function of the 'muscle pump'. The 'muscle pump' plays a crucial role in maintaining normal blood circulation. When its function is weakened, it can lead to venous blood stasis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular health issues. Studies have shown that standing for more than two hours a day increases the risk of developing varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and other postural circulatory diseases. These conditions not only cause physical pain to patients but may also affect their normal work and life.

To achieve healthy office work, the key is to break the static state. One can adopt an 'alternating sitting and standing' work mode, using an adjustable-height desk to switch between sitting and standing postures every 30 - 60 minutes. This allows different parts of the body to rest and adjust, avoiding the harms of prolonged static postures. Additionally, simple office break activities such as stretching and short walks can be incorporated. Stretching helps relax muscles and relieve tension, while short walks promote blood circulation and enhance physical vitality. Through these methods, the health risks associated with prolonged sitting and standing can be effectively reduced, improving work efficiency and quality of life.
