What is the Standard Height of an Office Chair?
The standard height range for office chairs typically falls between 40 and 50 centimeters. Specifically, according to the GB3326-1997 standard, the seat height of an office chair should be between 400 and 440 millimeters (i.e., 40 to 44 centimeters). However, mainstream products on the market offer a wider range of height adjustments, allowing for free adjustment between 360 and 480 millimeters (36 to 48 centimeters). This design aims to meet the needs of people of different heights, ensuring a comfortable sitting posture that conforms to ergonomic principles.

Height selection should be based on the user's height. For most adults, the commonly used height for men is 43 centimeters, while women should use an appropriate height as a benchmark. Specific recommendations are as follows:
- Height of 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the seat height to between 42 and 43 centimeters. This height prevents the feet from hanging in the air or the knees from bending excessively, keeping the legs naturally relaxed.
- Height of 165 centimeters: A height between 43 and 45 centimeters is suitable. At this height, the thighs are parallel to the ground, and the soles of the feet can rest flat on the ground, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.
- Height of 170 centimeters: The optimal height is between 45 and 47 centimeters. This range ensures that the body forms a reasonable angle with the desk, avoiding bending or shrugging, and reducing pressure on the cervical and lumbar spine.
The importance of adjustable flexibility. The height adjustment function (36 to 48 centimeters) of mainstream office chairs on the market not only covers the standard range but also adapts to special needs. For example, users who are shorter or taller can find the most suitable sitting posture through adjustment; if the desk height is fixed, the chair height can also be adjusted to achieve a "desk-chair match", avoiding muscle strain caused by height differences.
Design basis and ergonomics. The standardization of office chair heights is derived from statistical analysis of human body dimensions. Taking Chinese adult men as an example, the sitting height range from the 5th to the 95th percentile is approximately 86 to 99 centimeters. Combined with a desk height (usually 70 to 75 centimeters), the chair height needs to be between 40 and 50 centimeters to ensure an ideal posture of "elbows bent at 90 degrees and forearms resting flat on the desk". This design effectively distributes body weight and reduces the risk of damage to the spine and joints from prolonged sitting.
