Staff Chairs and Other Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs have quality and safety hazards, including issues such as backrest breakage, insufficient stability, and bolt failure.

From a classification perspective, OfficeMate categorizes office chairs into narrow and broad definitions. Narrowly defined office chairs refer to backrest chairs used by individuals in a seated position while performing desk work. Broadly defined office chairs encompass all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs.

In terms of quality and safety, office chairs face numerous problems. On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada initiated a recall of office chairs manufactured in China due to the potential for backrest breakage. As a crucial supporting component of office chairs, a broken backrest leaves users without back support, making them highly susceptible to falls and physical injuries such as fractures and abrasions due to loss of balance while seated. This poses a significant threat to user safety.

On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation conducted a national supervision and inspection of office chairs and found that 15 batches of products were non-compliant, with stability issues being particularly prominent. Stability is a key performance indicator for office chairs, and unstable chairs are prone to tipping over during use. For example, when users maintain a normal seated position or perform minor movements such as turning or leaning forward, an unstable office chair may fail to maintain balance, causing the user to fall and resulting in accidents.

On January 16, 2025, the United States initiated a recall of WorkPro Momentum office chairs manufactured in China due to potential bolt failure. Bolts play a crucial role in connecting and securing the various components of office chairs. If bolts fail, the connections between chair components become loose, potentially leading to partial structural detachment or even complete chair disintegration. In such cases, users seated on the chair may lose balance due to sudden structural changes, risking falls and severe physical injuries.
