Spring Office Chair Incident

Admin October 11, 2026

The "Spring Office Chair Incident" primarily refers to explosion issues caused by component defects in pneumatic lifting swivel chairs, rather than traditional spring-structured office chairs.

Typical Explosion Cases

  1. 2009 Jiaozhou, Shandong Incident: A 14-year-old boy was fatally injured when the top rod of a pneumatic chair pierced his buttocks while adjusting it, leading to excessive blood loss.
  2. 2010 Xiamen Incident: A woman suffered rectal tears when sitting on a lifting chair while blow-drying her hair; screws, gaskets, and other fragments were propelled into her body due to the chair explosion.
  3. 2017 Anhui Incident: An office chair exploded, breaking into two pieces and damaging a computer host.

Causes of Explosions

  1. Quality Issues with Pneumatic Rods
    • Thin Wall Thickness: The wall thickness of pneumatic rods should be โ‰ฅ2.0 millimeters. If it falls below this standard, explosions can occur when pressure exceeds the tolerance limit.
    • Insufficient Gas Purity: Pneumatic rods should be filled with inert gases (such as nitrogen). If the purity is insufficient or replaced with compressed air, a sudden increase in pressure under high temperatures can lead to explosions.
    • Sealing Defects: Leakage from sealing rings or the absence of explosion-proof steel plates can cause rapid gas release, triggering explosions.
  2. Improper Use
    • Frequent Adjustments: Frequent lifting or rotating adjustments can overheat the pneumatic rod, increasing the risk of explosion.
    • Abrupt Operations: Sitting too forcefully or adjusting the handle too abruptly can impact the pneumatic rod, causing component damage.

Preventive Measures

  1. Purchase Genuine Products
    • Choose products with clear manufacturer information, quality certificates, and registered trademarks, preferably priced above 200 yuan.
    • Check the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting mechanism and ensure an explosion-proof steel plate (thickness โ‰ฅ2 millimeters) is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod.
  2. Usage Precautions
    • Avoid frequent lifting adjustments to reduce friction and heat generation in the pneumatic rod.
    • Regularly inspect chair components and immediately discontinue use if air leakage or unusual noises are detected.

Market Supervision Situation

In 2020, a national market supervision inspection revealed that 23.3% of office chairs failed quality tests, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were substandard high/low-temperature resistance of pneumatic rods and the absence of explosion-proof steel plates.
