Sponge Office Chair Odor
Admin October 11, 2026
The odor from sponge office chairs can be treated using different methods depending on the severity of the odor, and preventive measures should also be taken.

Mild Odor Treatment
- Physical Adsorption: Use bamboo charcoal bags or activated carbon. Their porous structures can effectively adsorb odors. Regularly expose them to sunlight to restore their adsorption capacity. Dried coffee grounds or sun-dried green tea also have some adsorption effects and can be placed around the chair.
- Natural Fragrance: Coffee grounds or tea bags can emit a natural fragrance, improving the odor environment.
- Ventilation and Sun Exposure: Move the chair to a well-ventilated area, open the windows to create air convection, and use an electric fan to blow air through the seat gaps to accelerate air circulation and remove moisture. It is recommended to continue for 24 - 48 hours and use sunlight for sterilization.
Stubborn Odor Treatment
- Chemical Methods: White vinegar and baking soda can deal with alkaline and acidic odors respectively. Alcohol or hydrogen peroxide can be used for disinfection, but be careful to control the amount to avoid making the chair too wet. If the effect is not satisfactory, consider professional ozone disinfection.
- Local Precision Cleaning:
- Fabric Seats: Prepare a mild neutral soap solution or mix white vinegar with warm water in a ratio of about 1:10. Dip a clean soft cloth or sponge into it, wring it out until it is semi-dry, and then wipe small areas or areas with obvious stains or odors in a circular motion from the outside in. For stubborn stains, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub. When mold spots are found, treat them locally with a white vinegar solution or a special mold cleaner, and make sure to dry them after cleaning.
- Leather Seats: Use a special leather cleaner according to the product instructions. After cleaning and wiping the surface dry, evenly sprinkle baking soda powder on the seat, let it sit for several hours or overnight, use its micro-particles to adsorb odor molecules and neutralize odors in an alkaline environment, and finally clean it thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth.
Treatment for the Most Severe Cases
If the sponge inside is moldy, steam cleaning can be used to sterilize deep inside the sponge. Using a professional interior cleaner is also effective. If all else fails, the seat can only be disassembled for thorough cleaning or replacement.
Preventive Measures
Avoid eating near the office chair, regularly clean the surrounding environment, use seat covers for easy removal and washing, and place fragrances or lemon slices to effectively prevent odor generation.
