Drawing an Office Chair with SolidWorks

Admin October 09, 2026

The following steps can be followed to draw an office chair using SolidWorks:

Drawing the Metal Frame

First, enter the 3D sketching environment and draw a 3D sketch as the path based on the actual shape and dimensions of the office chair frame. This path determines the overall direction and general outline of the frame. Next, draw a 2D sketch on an appropriate plane as the cross-section. The shape and dimensions of the cross-section should match the cross-sectional characteristics of the frame. After completing the sketch, use the 'Sweep' function, selecting the previously drawn 3D sketch as the path and the 2D sketch as the cross-section, to complete the drawing of half of the frame.

For the cylindrical part at the end of the frame, use the 'Extruded Boss' function. With the end of the frame as the reference, draw a circular sketch and extrude it to the appropriate height. The middle connecting rod can also be created using the 'Extruded Boss' function by drawing a sketch at the corresponding position and extruding it. After completing half of the frame and its้™„ๅฑž structures (accessory structures), use the 'Mirror' function, selecting an appropriate mirror plane, to mirror the half-drawn frame and obtain the complete metal frame of the chair.

Creating the Seat Cushion and Backrest

The seat cushion and backrest are drawn using surface methods. First, create four sketch lines. Depending on the actual design requirements, use arcs or spline curves to draw these lines, which will determine the surface shape of the seat cushion and backrest. After completing the sketch lines, use the 'Loft' function, selecting these four sketch lines in sequence, to create the surface of half of the seat cushion or backrest.

Next, use the 'Mirror' function, selecting an appropriate mirror plane, to mirror the half-created surface and obtain the complete surface of the seat cushion or backrest. Then, use the 'Thicken' function to add a certain thickness to the surface, turning it into a solid. Finally, use the 'Fillet' function to round the edges of the seat cushion and backrest, making them more ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing.

Adding Other Accessories

For the chair legs, first establish two reference planes and then use tools such as 'Extruded Boss' on these planes to draw according to the actual shape and dimensions of the chair legs. The armrests can also be created using basic feature functions such as extrusion and rotation.

If you want to add detailed features to the seat cushion, such as dents and fillets, use the 'Extruded Cut' function to create dents and the 'Fillet' function to add fillets, making the seat cushion more realistic and comfortable.
