Smash the Boss's Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The act of smashing the boss's office chair may involve illegal behavior and could result in criminal penalties or public security management penalties.

From a criminal law perspective, the act of smashing the boss's office chair may constitute the crime of intentional destruction of property. When the value of the smashed office chair is relatively large or there are other serious circumstances, the perpetrator may be sentenced to up to three years in prison, detention, or a fine; if the value is extremely large or there are other particularly serious circumstances, the punishment may be more severe, ranging from three to seven years in prison. This provision aims to protect the ownership of public and private property, maintain social order and fairness and justice, and impose corresponding legal sanctions on those who intentionally destroy the property of others.

Even if the value of the smashed office chair is not high and does not constitute a criminal offense, the act may still violate the Public Security Management Punishment Law of the People's Republic of China. According to this law, for the act of intentionally damaging public or private property, the perpetrator may be detained for not less than five days but not more than ten days and may also be fined not more than 500 yuan; if the circumstances are relatively serious, the punishment may be more severe, including detention for not less than ten days but not more than fifteen days and a fine of not more than 1,000 yuan. This provision reflects the law's role in punishing and educating minor illegal acts and aims to maintain social harmony and stability.

For example, an elderly employee named Lao Wang, on the eve of his retirement, lost control of his emotions due to job adjustment issues and smashed the leader's office with a chair, including the office chair. This act not only damaged the office environment but also harmed the company's property rights. Eventually, the police intervened in the investigation, and Lao Wang faced corresponding legal responsibilities. This case serves as a warning that no matter the reason, one should not resort to violent means to solve problems; otherwise, they will face severe legal punishment.
