Slope of Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

The slope of an office chair should be adjusted according to the specific usage scenario, as the appropriate angle range between the backrest and the seat varies in different scenarios.

In focused work scenarios, it is recommended to set the angle between the backrest and the seat at 90ยฐ-100ยฐ. This angle design helps maintain a working posture where the body leans forward and the gaze is focused on the screen. When the backrest and seat are at 90ยฐ, the body is in a relatively upright sitting position, reducing distractions caused by leaning back. The 100ยฐ angle, while ensuring focused vision, provides a certain degree of support to the back, alleviating fatigue from maintaining an upright sitting position for extended periods and improving work efficiency.

When reading or thinking, the angle can be widened to 100ยฐ-110ยฐ. Within this angle range, the back receives more adequate support, allowing the body to lean back slightly and relax both physically and mentally. Reading or thinking requires a certain level of concentration, but the physical tension required is slightly lower compared to focused work. Appropriately widening the angle between the backrest and the seat can relieve tension in the back muscles, enabling users to immerse themselves more comfortably in reading or thinking.

For lunch breaks or short rests, it is suitable to adjust the angle to 110ยฐ-130ยฐ, approaching a semi-reclined position. Using a U-shaped pillow and a lumbar support at this time can help the spine relax more naturally. Lunch breaks or short rests are meant to allow the body to fully rest and recover. A semi-reclined position can reduce pressure on the spine and relax muscles throughout the body. A U-shaped pillow can support the neck, while a lumbar support fills the gap between the waist and the backrest, further enhancing comfort.

Additionally, according to the national standard 'Ergonomic Requirements for Healthy Homes - Part 3: Office Desks and Chairs', the original reference angle (angle between the backrest and the seat) of an office chair should be 90ยฐ to 95ยฐ. There is also a view that the appropriate slope of a chair in a general office environment is usually between 95 degrees and 105 degrees. These standards provide reference guidelines for the design and use of office chairs, ensuring that they meet basic functional requirements while also conforming to ergonomic principles to safeguard the health and comfort of users.
