Sitting in an Office Chair is Tiring

Admin October 11, 2026

Feeling tired while sitting in an office chair is a common phenomenon, primarily caused by factors such as prolonged sitting, incorrect posture, lack of exercise, and high mental stress. It can be alleviated through regular breaks, maintaining proper posture, increasing physical activity, and learning to relax.

  1. Stand up and move regularly
Prolonged sitting can lead to a decline in bodily functions, muscle atrophy, reduced metabolic rate, poor blood circulation, and oxygen deprivation, resulting in fatigue. It is recommended to take a 5-10 minute break every 45-60 minutes of work to engage in simple stretching exercises, such as stretching the neck, shoulders, waist, and legs, or simply walking around. Using a standing desk is also a good option. These activities can promote blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, and reduce fatigue.

  2. Maintain proper sitting posture
Incorrect sitting posture can place significant pressure on the lumbar spine and back muscles, causing repeated stress on the intervertebral disc fibrous ring, herniation of the nucleus pulposus, continuous contraction of the back muscles, reduced blood flow, lactic acid buildup leading to soreness, and muscle stiffness spreading from the waist to the shoulders and neck. Adjust the height of the chair and desk so that your feet are flat on the ground, your knees and hips are at a 90-degree angle, your back is straight, and your shoulders are relaxed. The height of the lumbar support cushion should align with the L3 to L5 segments of the spine, between 20 and 25 centimeters high, to provide good lumbar support.

  3. Increase daily exercise
Lack of exercise can lead to insufficient exercise and relaxation of the body's muscles and joints, further exacerbating fatigue. Try to set aside 30 minutes each day for aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, jogging, or swimming. These exercises can improve cardiovascular function and metabolic rate, enhance physical endurance and vitality, and help alleviate fatigue during office work.

  4. Learn to relax and reduce stress
High mental stress can also disrupt the body's endocrine system, affecting metabolism and the immune system, leading to fatigue. Try methods such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing to relieve stress and maintain mental balance. These relaxation techniques can help reduce the body's stress response, alleviate tension and anxiety, and thus relieve fatigue.
