Sinking Function Office Chair
Admin October 22, 2026
If an office chair has a sinking problem, it can be repaired using either a hose clamp or a PVC pipe. Here are the specific steps:

Repair with a Hose Clamp
- Expose the Cylinder: Slide the plastic skirt of the office chair down the cylinder until the metal cylinder is fully exposed. If the plastic skirt covers the cylinder, remove it first: Turn the chair upside down, use a screwdriver to press the base fixing clip, remove the wheels and skirt, and then reinstall the wheels.
- Install the Hose Clamp: Wrap the hose clamp around the cylinder without tightening it yet. To enhance the grip of the clamp, wrap rubber bands, tape around the cylinder, or sand the surface of the cylinder (if the surface is dirty or greasy, clean it first).
- Secure and Test: Tighten the hose clamp, adjust the chair height to the appropriate position, pull the hose clamp tight, and rotate the screw to secure it. Test the stability of the chair: If the height is incorrect, move the clamp up or down to readjust; if the clamp slips, reinforce the contact surface with rubber strips or switch to the PVC pipe method.
Repair with a PVC Pipe
- Measure the Dimensions: Adjust the chair to the desired height and measure the diameter and length of the cylinder. Most models are suitable for a 1.5-inch diameter PVC pipe, and the length should be selected according to the actual size of the cylinder; a plastic shower ring can also be used as an alternative, but its sturdiness may be insufficient.
- Cut the Pipe: Secure the PVC pipe in a vise and cut it lengthwise (only on one side) with a hacksaw or reciprocating saw. It is recommended to wear a mask or respirator to prevent inhaling dust during cutting. If you don't have cutting tools, you can keep the pipe intact and install it directly after removing the chair wheels.
- Install and Secure: Push the cut side of the PVC pipe onto the cylinder to secure the chair. If the pipe is not cut, remove the wheels first, slide the intact pipe over the cylinder, and then reinstall the wheels.
Precautions: Ensure the chair is in a stable position before operating to avoid tipping over; wear protective gear when using tools; if the surface of the cylinder is severely worn or deformed, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to replace the parts.
