Simple Office Chair Transformation

Admin October 13, 2026

There are mainly two ways to transform a simple office chair, and you can choose the appropriate plan according to your needs and materials.

Plan 1: Upgrade the Front Passenger Seat to an Office Chair

If you have a front passenger seat on hand, you can transform it into a fully functional simple office chair. The first step is to customize a steel plate. You need to reserve 16 holes, with 10 for fixing the seat body and 6 for installing armrests (if armrests are not required, only 10 holes are needed). It is recommended to choose a metal with a moderate thickness and strong load-bearing capacity, such as cold-rolled steel plate, to ensure that it will not deform during long-term use.
The second step is to assemble the seat and the steel plate. Connect the steel plate to the bottom of the seat with six screws, ensuring that the screws are tightened and evenly distributed to avoid loosening due to uneven local stress. The third step is to complete the basic assembly. Fix the seat, the steel plate, and other components (such as the backrest adjustment mechanism) with four screws. After tightening the nuts, check whether each connection is stable. You can test the stability by gently shaking it. Finally, install the casters. Choose silent and wear-resistant universal wheels to ensure that the chair moves smoothly and does not damage the floor. The transformed office chair can retain the adjustment functions of the original seat (such as height and tilt), and at the same time has the flexibility of an office chair, making it suitable for work scenarios that require frequent movement.

Plan 2: Refurbish an Old Wooden Chair

If you prefer a simpler operation, you can directly refurbish an old wooden chair. The first step is sanding. Use sandpaper (it is recommended to gradually change from coarse to fine, such as 80-grit โ†’ 120-grit โ†’ 240-grit) to sand the seat surface, backrest, and legs comprehensively, removing the old paint, burrs, and stains on the surface to make the wood surface smooth and flat. Pay attention to the corners and details during sanding to avoid omissions. The second step is painting. Choose an environmentally friendly wood paint (such as water-based paint), mix colors according to your preferences (such as natural wood color, white, or Morandi color system), and apply it evenly with a brush for 2-3 coats. Wait for each coat to dry completely between applications (usually 4-6 hours). When painting, pay attention to keeping the brushing direction consistent to avoid brush marks or sags. The refurbished wooden chair retains a simple style and enhances its design sense through color updates. It is suitable for matching with modern or Nordic-style office environments. Moreover, it has a low cost and is simple to operate, making it suitable for handicraft enthusiasts to try.
