Simple Office Chair Repair

Admin October 16, 2026

Simple office chair repair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type of fault, as follows:

Repair for Sinking Issues If the chair height cannot be fixed or continues to sink, it is usually caused by the failure of the air pressure rod seal or insufficient friction.

  1. Hose Clamp Reinforcement Method: Slide the plastic skirt of the chair to the bottom of the cylinder and adjust it to a height where the seat is level with the knees. If the skirt covers the cylinder, invert the chair and use a screwdriver to press the base fixing clip, then remove the wheels and skirt. Loosen the hose clamp screw, wrap rubber bands or tape around the metal cylinder (to increase friction), then wrap the hose clamp and tighten the screw. Test whether the height adjustment function is restored.
  2. PVC Pipe Fixing Method: Measure the diameter of the cylinder (most models are suitable for a 1.5-inch pipe) and the length of the cylinder at the desired height. Purchase a PVC pipe of the corresponding size and saw a longitudinal crack in it. Push one side of the cut onto the cylinder to fix it, using the rigidity of the pipe to prevent the chair from sinking further.

Repair for Tilt Issues If the chair is unstable when placed or leans to one side when rolling, it is mostly caused by deformed wheel feet or a damaged seat plate.

  1. Wheel Inspection and Replacement: Place the chair upright and upside down to observe whether the wheel feet are in even contact with the ground. If the wheel feet are bent, replace the entire set of matching wheels (it is difficult to replace them individually). When removing the old wheels, you can pull them out directly or use a screwdriver to pry the clips. If necessary, apply lubricant to assist in disassembly. Before installing the new wheels, apply spray lubricant (such as WD-40) to the base socket, use a rubber mallet to knock the new wheels into the socket, and test the rolling smoothness.
  2. Seat Plate Inspection: If the chair still tilts after replacing the wheels, check whether the seat plate (the square steel plate at the bottom of the seat) is deformed or broken. If the damage is severe, contact the manufacturer to replace a seat plate of the same model.

Daily Maintenance Regular maintenance can extend the service life of the chair and reduce the occurrence of faults.

  1. Surface Cleaning: Vacuum the mesh/fabric seat surface weekly to remove dust, and wipe stains with a neutral detergent; for leather seat surfaces, dust them with a dry cloth daily, wipe them with a slightly damp cloth weekly, and apply maintenance oil every quarter to prevent cracking; for plastic/metal frames, wipe them with soapy water and then dry them to avoid corrosion.
  2. Adjustment System Lubrication: When the air pressure rod jams during lifting and lowering, drip 1-2 drops of silicone oil at the connection; when the tilt system has high adjustment resistance, open the chassis housing and apply grease; when the armrest adjustment is stiff, spray a small amount of lubricant.
  3. Connection Component Tightening: Regularly check the connecting screws between the seat surface and the air pressure rod, the chassis and the air pressure rod, and the armrest and the seat surface. Use a cross screwdriver or hex wrench to tighten loose screws to prevent structural looseness from causing abnormal noises or damage.

Special Repair for Leather Seats: If the leather has scratches or fading, use professional sanding tools to process the repair area to ensure that the color is coordinated with the surrounding area and there are no repair marks. However, refer to the product manual or contact a professional repair person for specific steps.
